Every body post your feed tricks PLEASE

Kalmbach's Flock Maker crumbles is what we use for baby chicks, adults, roosters, AND ducks, as it's complete for all. It's 20% protein, which is good for my show silkies, and very low calcium, so good for the chicks and roosters, but the ducks and hens need more so they get a dish of oyster...

    Setting up our dust bath

We free-range, so they make their own dust baths in the summer. In the winter, dust baths are kitty litter boxes in the coops. A little DE and ash are mixed into the dirt. As I mentioned, we've been raising and breeding silkies for nearly a decade now. If it were going to hurt their lungs...

First brooder setup—what temp and bedding for day 1?

I hatch a ton, and you pretty much nailed it. It doesn't matter how much room as they barely move the first day or two, but that's why the temp is crucial, as they don't move out of the way of it, at first. They'll lie there and pant.

Singleton.. Glad I still have the others

Awe! Perhaps in a week, you could try putting it with them. It'll be stronger then and be able to scamper to avoid getting stepped on. I had put a silkie chick a few days old in with 3 speckled sussex that were three weeks old, and it worked. The silkie is over on the right.

    Respiratory Issues in Flock

To get them to eat better, have you tried mash? That's just soaking their feed with water in a dish. Ours go nuts over it.

    Respiratory Issues in Flock

You are so welcome! I sure hope this works! In the meantime, do you have some poultry vitamins for their water? If not, Poultry Cell and Nutri-Drench are both the ones most of us use, but any brand of poultry vitamin would work. This will help them as they fight whatever it is they have.

    Treatment?

Awe, poor thing! She possibly has either an egg-binding issue or coccidiosis. How's her poop look? Is she eating/drinking? Has she been dewormed recently? Checked for mites? She could be trying to get her first post-molt egg out; that's one possibility. I would give her 300 mgs of...

Introducing a muscovy hen into a chicken flock?

It's mostly size. However, I do have a case here where a silkie rooster had an aversion to two cuckoo silkie hens I'd hatched and raised. I believe it was simply because they had different colored feathers than any of the others. He killed one and was in the process of killing the other...

They ate all the calcium! Too much?

We have about a dozen roosters, and I'm down to 20 chicks. We've been raising and breeding show-quality silkies for nearly a decade. Your feed is just fine. I just want higher protein and low calcium. We use Kalmbach's Flock Maker (20%), as we have chicks, adults, and ducks who are all on...

    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I went to look, and the last email I got from them was 10/22/25. Here's a snippet from there. You'll see on the bottom, a link to the infected poultry. This is that link: https://datcp.wi.gov/Pages/Programs_Services/HPAIWisconsin.aspx You'll not see any saying the chickens had anything...

    Medication/antibiotics

Can mean she's not getting enough oxygen or is having heart issues. Is her comb always purple now or comes and goes? If you are determined to get amoxicillin, here's where I got mine: 1 ea. H-6-1 Amoxicillin 250mg. (25 Capsules) $19.95...

    Respiratory Issues in Flock

Wow, so sorry! :hugs My first thought would be yours: get them all on an antibiotic. I'd find one that can be mixed in their water, rather than to have to give 39 pills per day. Here are some sites to get antibiotics online. The Tylosin at Jedds has it for water, has the dosage, and lists...

    Is this bumble foot?

Don't kick yourself as this is how we all learn, by making a few mistakes on the way. You caught it early so kudos to you for that! If the PRID doesn't take care of it, there are several good bumblefoot articles here with other ideas. Hopefully, that does the trick though!

Putting soon to hatch eggs under broody?

A month ago, I hatched about 40 silkie eggs. I had a broodie silkie hen who accepted them. She was out in a breeding pen with them and two roosters. We put a Cozy Coop radiant heater in the coop as she no way could keep that many warm. A silkie hen that's broody would sit on rocks if you...

Winter brooding question: keep ~a dozen chicks in the incubator or buy a brooder?

Welcome to BYC! Awe, hard to see but are those quail or just striped chicks? You will run out of room in the incubator in about a week. They'll need a brooder that's approximately 3-4 times larger than their current setup, with a source of heat at one end. Here's our Learning Center with...

ISO Pullets, Possibly eggs. Buff Oringtons, Light Sussex, Silkie, Cochin's Araucana's.

Which would make 100% paints. I'm not sure if you knew that or not. :) The way to get a dominant white silkie is to buy eggs or chicks from someone who has a paint pen. You will have a hard time finding what you're looking for in grown silkies, and it's probably best that you find a quality...
