I really had no intent of hurting any feelings, sorry for that. What i meant by that is, that even though they're beautiful birds, they're not up to the standard we work towards in marans. We breed them to represent a certain shape, colour, egg colour, etc. These animals you have are really nice...
I'd say no more than 2. Here in europe, organic regulations say 4 m2 per chicken outside, and 6 chickens per m2 inside. Speaking from experience, this is about right. I just looked up how much 56 sq feet is,google says it's aout 5 m2, so i wouldn't put in more than 2.
You won't get very dark eggs from hatchery chickens. Look for specific breeders. Also hatcheries sell at ridiculous prices, small breeders will give you your money's worth
There's no way to know the gender until the chest feathers come out. If the chest feathers are black, it's a rooster. If they're brown (wheaten coloured), it's a female.
Which is why i suggested campine cross. The coloring is dominant, so if crossed to a rather bulky chicken, you'd get this. The coloring is definitely campine
All that white... They really aren't supposed to show white feathers, exept for maybe a few of the flight feathers. Wouldn't breed them if they were mine, although they're good specimens to put with a layer flock :)
A wheaten x black copper marans is supposed to have black copper coloring, so those couldn't have been purebred. My guess about the bird in the picture? Gold campine with bad coloring or gold campine cross.
I just feed them regular layer mix from the local store, no supplemental calcium, no laying hormones. What's calcium deposits? Does that mean too much calcium?
