Hi all, we hatched out some eggs this spring and got what seems to be a really cute EE rooster. His dad is also super nice, (lets me pick him up and carry him around) and I've no idea how genetic "niceness" may be in roosters but we are currently full up on roosters. So I was wondering if anyone...
This is Beau, well it was Belle but this morning, "she" crowed, twice. He hatched on January 30th.
His dad also an EE and is a super nice "lap rooster", he lets me pick him up and carry him around. Mom is likely one of our grey blue egg laying EEs.
Normally I take the "extra" roosters we hatch...
Wow that EE Ayam Cemani cross is really cool. I'd be sorely tempted if I were closer. Too bad I'm so far away and I have kind of extra roosters atm myself :/
We have a fox that comes during broad daylight with all kinds of daylight activities going on. I kind of wonder if my rooster is actually helping it. It leads our hens into the woods and then sits there crowing = dinner bell for the fox. Today I was only about 100 yards from them, and the...
We've had an unfortunate run in with a neighbor and rather than keep our girls cooped up we'd like to give them away to a good home until we can get a new place for more chickens!
There are 2 black sex links, 2 easter eggers (green egg layers), a black australorp and a barred rock. They are...
I haven't actually measured directly though I did do some educated guess measurements. It would be difficult to truly measure given the fences that are in the way but I'm looking at about 120 feet which is what animal control said they were enforcing on the coop. We could potentially move the...
So we got chickens two years ago, didn't do the usual practice of alerting the neighbors but have generally been well received after the fact (a few neighbors asked why we didn't get a rooster!).
I had read the city ordinance several times before we bought them however, animal control did show...

You're right! Sex-links are produced for their LACK of broodiness.
Indeed, but this one goes broody every three months! After the 4th time we thought we'd see if we could make use of her to hatch eggs, mostly as an experiment. Definitely not a useful broody! Unfortunately that means we...
Maybe this is obvious to everyone, but apparently black sex links don't make good broodies. Or at least *our* black sex link is terrible at it. Granted we started with mail ordered eggs but we had one hatch, which she promptly stepped on and crushed. We had 7 eggs remaining which I just broke...
Well one hatched this morning and I was very excited. Just went down to check a few minutes ago and the hen had stepped on it and crushed it . . . . . grrrrrr.
Nothing at all happening with the other 8 eggs that I can tell, so we may be out of luck.
I had something similar happen and I think it may have killed all of our eggs, but I didn't notice it until the goo was partly dried. I'd give them a good wipe down with a moist rag.
We have a hen that goes broody every few months. So we mail ordered a dozen eggs off of ebay to break her in a fun and entertaining way. Our hen had kicked out two or three eggs and my husband thought she had just lost track of them so he put them back under her.
A few days ago (Today is hatch...
