    Frostbite vent

Also, unless you've got them in a sealed space with a de-humidifer, it's impossible to remove all the humidity. For instance, at the moment according to Wunderground, Indianapolis, IN is hovering around 66% humidity. All you can do is mitigate it.

🪶☕ the cochin café: Cochin Lovers’ Thread ☕🐔

Yeah, I don't know for sure, but some prices I've noticed on decent show birds is going to be over $100 and probably closer to $200 - or more - depending on quality.

    Is Greenfire farms trustable?

What state? I suspect that there's more than one "Gregg county" in the country.

    I'm going on an adventure!

I've got this pic in another thread, but I'm pretty pleased with it so I wanted it to go here as well. This is Pippin at 6 months: He seems to have calmed down quite a bit since they've gone into the new coop, he's stopped challenging me at all. I haven't tried picking him up in a few days...

🪶☕ the cochin café: Cochin Lovers’ Thread ☕🐔

Thanks! I just went out to check for eggs (going below freezing tonight,) and actually managed to get a halfway decent pic of him as he is now. I'd be very happy with this pic if not for the background. Interesting to see what difference a couple of months makes. Pippin is a black bantam cochin...

Chat room for non religious poultry keepers! :D

Kinda depends on the breeds and what your goals are. A mix would be prettier, if you intend on breeding on down the line, purebreds seem to be at least somewhat easier as far as moving unwanted cockerels along.

🪶☕ the cochin café: Cochin Lovers’ Thread ☕🐔

My understanding is that "pekin" is more a UK and commonwealth usage - what in the US would be a bantam cochin. Pippin at 12 weeks. I really need to get a more recent picture of him, he's 6.5 months now.

    Pond heating??

How deep is their pond? If it's deep enough, a submersible fountain pump might help depending on what kind of extreme cold we're talking about. The pump would keep the water moving from the bottom to the top and theoretically the water at the bottom of the pond would be warmer (relatively...

    Those damn trash pandas

We don't bother trapping the 'coons anymore as our newish neighbor is a dedicated trapper after they killed 10 of his chicks. However, when we were, we used a live trap and an "un-alive" bin that the live trap fit into that was then connected to the exhaust of our truck via 10-15 feet of...

Chat room for non religious poultry keepers! :D

Made it! Although I did skim quite a bit of the last half. Not getting much done today; sitting in the computer room with an afghan and the little space heater going (it makes more sense than heating up the whole house just because I'm a bit chilly.) My little weather station says it's...

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

Was just thinking about this poll. I checked "whenever it needs it" which is the old coop. As far as the actual coop goes it will still be "whenever it needs it", but I incorporated a poop tray into my newly built coop and that gets scooped daily, or at most every two days.

    I'm going on an adventure!

Nosy Amber "helping" to scoop the poop tray. It always astonishes me how curious chickens are. Always wants to come see what I'm doing, although I suspect mostly she just wants to check if treats are involved.

Bantam Buff Cochin Cockerel - Central Alabama

Sorry :(, no. Really don't drive all that much, and when we do it's usually just to Wetumpka or Chattanooga where we have relatives. The most I'd be willing to do would be very local, within 10-20 miles.

Just recently discovered this thread. I'm slowly making my way through all the previous posts (I'm up to page 160! Hurrah!) Nice to have a place to hang out.

Name 3 Things You Did Or Will Do Today - 2025

Go through all the fasteners and toss or pass along the ones that I'm unlikely to ever use; organize said fasteners in my new workbench; and build roll-around carts/tables to get the bench bandsaw and drill press off my miter saw bench. First two accomplished, third started. I feel so organized.

    I'm going on an adventure!

Got a good picture of Falco. I'm trying to re-home him, dunno how successful I'll be. It's so difficult to move boys along, especially little bantams.

Bantam Buff Cochin Cockerel - Central Alabama

This is a long shot, but 6-month-old Falco needs a new home. He and Pippin have started fighting a bit and I'd like to move him along before it gets out of hand. So far Pip has put him in his place without too much bother, but I don't want it to get to the point of a knock-down drag-out. I don't...
