Integrating New Chick with Broody Hen

Why at night? I would open up at daytime, so you can see what happens. If the mothers is good, she protects her chicks if necessary. Much space and much clutter helps a lot.

    Too much calcium

It seems they started a new experiment 14 years later, new research. This time not with chickens but with pigs. https://www.bnnvara.nl/zembla/artikelen/ministerie-lnv-financiert-nieuw-onderzoek-naar-biologische-voeding After the Zembla broadcast, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food...

    Too much calcium

@stormc Tis is a translation of a Fact check article (pdf) of the university (WUR) that collaborated in the chicken experiment/research https://edepot.wur.nl/534188 Is organic food healthier? Possibly, but according to Zembla, that conclusion from a study by WUR and others should not have...

    Too much calcium

5 years after the experiment a TV research team opened a ‘black book’ about how the ‘chicken experiment’ was compromised. In the video they show what happened https://www.bnnvara.nl/zembla/artikelen/het-kippenexperiment Unfortunately it is in Dutch and has no subtitles. Background The...

    Too much calcium

Everything I have seen about this research was in Dutch. https://www.louisbolk.nl/actueel/biologische-voeding-gezonder The research was only initial bc the large scale farming industry objected further research. The researchers were put under pressure to rewrite the conclusions. It was a...

Topic of the Week - Nest boxes

3 years later I still use the same nestboxes. The hanging one with has a new lid in the meantime. This are the favourite nestboxes to lay eggs and to sit for broodies too. The chicks come down the plank/stair when the are 5-7 days old. I have made an extra long/broad plank with an old towel for...

    Too much calcium

@chickpeatay , how is your sick chicken now? I have been reading through this thread and see it was highjacked with questions and responses about calcium and what to feed your chickens. Responding with even more different ways of doing things. Chickens can choose if you offer 2 kinds of feed...

Lost 2 pullets, one left to integrate… how??

The bullying might be not too bad with only 2 hens. It seems (from reading) that if you let the hens join the pullet, the chances they start bullying the pullet are less obvious. Bc they are not on their own territory.

Lost 2 pullets, one left to integrate… how??

This age gives you a third possibility to integrate. Put one of your adult hens with the lonely pullet. If they get along, or after a month you can start to integrate these two together in your existing flock. Or if you have many hens: add a third hen and wait a little longer. How many hens...

5 week old chick - weird breathing noise

I cant say what it is. I had sick chicks once, they all got a cold and sneezed. All the chicks got over it without medication. The last one took 6 weeks to recover. If you want better advice, please film 🎦 and upload the video to vimeo or youtube to share it.

Lost 2 pullets, one left to integrate… how??

First :hugssorry to hear this happened. Second, don’t blame yourself. Sometime things like this are inevitable, even with the best intentions. Third, you are right about the integration. A lonely pullet probably wil have a hard time integrating into an existing flock. There a several options...
