Sounds like you have a great walk-in coop. We didn't think about that when DH built ours, so it is hard to reach the birds when they are roosting. Luckily, they don't all roost in there.
Fall 2024, our fruit trees are in the fenced chicken yard. Lo and behold, we did not even rake last year, and all the leaves were nicely shredded and tilled by the chickens. Less work for us, more fun for them. Win win!
How much fun! Little girls and boys growing up under your watchful eye. Hopefully they have stayed on the roosts by now. More adventures to post, for sure. Welcome to this thread.
All the Marans ones I bought last Spring from Jenks have feathered legs, but right now in molt they are naked.
So yesterday, an EE hen was seen mounting one of the CM hens (poor thing, she is molting and couldn't have felt too good with all that) and another hen came and pecked at the CM's head...
:hit Found Caramel this morning, who had died in the coop under the roosting bars. She was one of the 5 EEs I got last year.
Meanwhile, keeping my radar on for badly behaving cockerels. My DIL is experienced in prepping a bird for roasting.
Thanks! Our zoning does not permit boys, although neighbors didn't complain (of noise) in the past. I'll have to see how they act, but will probably rehome them. They are already large!
Everyone got treats of kale, BSF and birdseed. The boys are still quite jumpy and leary of Alfa and Kogasa,#1 & 2.
My son made this the other day. Then, we added fresh Dungeness crab meat from what DH caught. Divine!
