    What made you happy today?

We got the wood hubby cut yesterday all moved and stacked. Now it's awaiting splitting, but we'll do that when it's cooler. Quite a bit of nice dry oak from a standing dead tree. It had fallen on some electrical wires, so the electric company had to come out and cut it down.

I'm sorry one of them didn't make it. No way to know what it went through, what might have been wrong.

What did you do in the garden today?

Hubby and I hauled the wood he cut and I stacked yesterday. Now it's awaiting splitting. So I did nothing in the garden. Tomorrow, tomorrow...

Yesterday hubby cut up some wood. I was safety assistant and stacker. Today we'll haul the wood to the woodpiles. Eventually, we'll split it, probably in October/November. The farmers are cutting the corn now. Because we haven't had any rain, they are not making a mess of the dirt roads, which...

What did you do in the garden today?

I wear a size 10.5-11 shoe, am 5' 6.5" and remember my cousin saying, "Sally, you have big feet," when I was about 4. I thought he was just teasing. Sigh. I once saw a cute pair of shoes (about size 5) and they weren't cute in size 10. Another time, I asked if they "had these shoes in size...

I've seen a lot of bumble bees this year too. They find the flowers honey bees like first, it seems. I saw them on goldenrod and the asters before I saw our bees.

    Roof for metal pole run

@Henhouse1001, since most people reading this are in the US, I'll add that your dimensions are roughly 10 feet wide, and 6 feet deep. The 6 foot dimension is rather long to span with no support in the middle. Metal roofing is probably the cheapest option, but unless you run the sheets "the...

Name 3 Things You Did Or Will Do Today

I am going back to getting up at 6:00. (I'd been making it later to coincide with sunrise.) I will do laundry today. Unless we haul the wood hubby cut yesterday, I'll be weeding in the garden.

    Winter cold preparations

I ran out of the air filter material and used T-shirt material from old T-shirts. It had the same effect. I use white so it isn't too dark in the coop. The long winter days are dark and dreary enough.

    Winter cold preparations

I have several square feet of openings on my coop. ("open" means covered with 1/2" hardware cloth to keep out predators.) I cover them about mid-November with air filter material. There is still air exchange, but it cuts the breezes that blow through. I also put up wind block panels on the...

Having just had a claim for a totaled car this past summer, I'll mention this: The insurance adjuster low-balled us. I told her that the car had almost new (<2000 miles) tires. She said if I had the receipt for the tires, they could take that into consideration. Of course I didn't have the...

    Ground cover considerations

I almost never till anymore, unless I have to break up sod. Tilling can help put organic matter back into the soil, but it can also do some negative things too. Like bring up dormant weed seeds, or chop up weed/grass roots that will regenerate an entire plant from each piece. And, if you have...
