    How to find small breeders?

I forgot to mention this too. If you do find a breeder have your mom look it up in this Facebook page. I always check (search in the group search bar) there to make sure they haven’t scammed somebody in the past.

    How to find small breeders?

the Ameraucana breeders club and the Ameraucana alliance both have breeders directory on the website. You don’t have to be a member to research information on either website, only to post in the forums. Ameraucana can be tricky I have found (at least in my area) a lot of people think those...

Roosters… to keep or not to keep?

I had one of these unicorn roosters. I miss him everyday, he cemented my love of roosters and earned his title of flock master many times over in his 6 yrs. First time I knew he was special was when I came home from work and my husband was mowing and I couldn’t find any of my chickens...

    Different age chicks

I do have a hoop run that 1/2 is covered with a tarp. Unfortunately we had an ice storm this winter and part of the middle caved in but not all the way, just enough that I can’t get to the pop door to open and close it. My plan with that is to put the cockerels in there in a couple weeks, once...

    How to find small breeders?

Look into poultry shows in state. Most of the poultry clubs will have Facebook page, many people post ISO post and also make arrangements to bring birds, chicks or eggs to the show to pick up. I personally decided I won’t do shipped eggs any more. People are asking $60-70 a dozen the 20-25 for...

    Different age chicks

Pallet is a good idea. I have a few of those around I can prop up on bricks. I did notice today the young chick are laying on one side of the door and the older ones are laying on the other side. If the wire wasn’t there they would be napping in a big pile.

    Different age chicks

I have 2 groups of chicks 9 Ameraucana that are 8 weeks old and 6 Ameraucana that are 3 weeks old. I moved the 3 week old out to the coop in separate area where the old group can see them. How long before I can integrate the 2 groups? The younger group is more skiddish so I’m afraid if things...

    Chicks beaks breaking off??

Do you have hardware cloth covering something they have access to? I had a chick do this by catching her beak in hardware cloth. It’s like fingernail it grows back.

    Are these silkies show quality?

They are too young to tell the sex or if they are show potential. I know our 4H is pretty lenient than if it were APA/ABA in regards to standard of perfection, they are looking more for how the bird is conditioned and the child’s age appropriate knowledge of poultry care and the breed they...

Ameraucana breeding questions / BBS between breeds?

What would a BBS x lavender Ameraucana cross look like? When lavender and blue are bred together, Your lavender will never be the even continuous shade of light blue they are suppose to be by standard. They will have darker heads and sickle feathers and dark feather shafts that is a fault in the...

Chicks won’t put themselves to bed!

I have had to put a small night light in for grow outs so if it gets dark they follow the light. I have used a small battery operated keychain light. I go in after dark to check on them and shut it off.

    Brooder heat source?

I purchased a sweeter heater a couple years ago and I love them so easy to clean, different sizes to accommodate your needs, I can see under them, really easy to move up as the chicks get older. I have used them in my coop brooder too, originally that why I bought my first one because the mama...

Keeping older chicks happy in brooder.

I am in Northern NY, depending on where you are in NH your temps are about the same as mine (50-60's during day and 40's at night) or warmer. I would not hesitate to move 6 week old chicks into a draft free coop now. BUT you have not acclimated them to the cooler temps. I would start doing that...

Topic of the Week - Brooding and supplementing heat for chicks

I guess I don’t really do anything “textbook”. I have never used a heat lamp. For years I used a modified mama hen heat pad. I used a wire shelving, adjustable legs and bungee the heating pad underneath. Then a couple years ago I bought a sweeter heater and never looked back. I like the ease of...

    The AMERAUCANA thread

That makes more sense, I forgot about splash wheaten. I have been researching what happens when lavender is breed into blue and my brain just went to how pastel looked like the lavender wheaten hackles look in the pictures I’ve seen.

    The AMERAUCANA thread

His color is off some, he is really light for a blue wheaten. Is it possible he has some self blue (lavender) in his background somewhere. The lightness of his gold areas and lack of lacing kind of look like he might. I’m not an expert maybe someone in one of the breed clubs with more experience...
