Windy hill chickens - first flock(s) of my own

I do most of the crop checks when they are on their roost bar just before shutting them in for the night. They get used to it. Some still tend to shuffle along the roost bar if I take too long over it.

Two and a half hours. Rather cloudy but warm enough at 21C. More courgettes. This last batch of onions haven't done as well as those I planted earlier. One the other hand small onions do well when cooking for one.

She's a precocious brat. Honestly, you wouldn't want her.:p Just one of the many sad things about the Red Sex Link Ex Battery hens is I thought most of them looked lovely. The Golden Comet Red Sex Link easily competes with the Buff Orpington for cuddly.

I haven't looked. Not yet. The only way I know it's the same one as yesterday is, so far, no other Jackdaw will get that close or me or the chickens. While no doubt they don't all look the same they do all look very similar. The grey at the back of the neck is helpful and of course size. It...

He turned out a goodun with your patience. I must admit I used to chuckle when reading of Fabio's objection to the power tools and general chaos in his yard.:D

Now here's a thing. I've read a lot of stuff on BYC about assisted hatching, mostly where the eggs have been incubated in a machine. One could end up believing that a hen isn't capable of assisting her own chicks to hatch and if the hen doesn't help then there is something wrong with the hen. It...

Four hours today. Cloudy, humid but stayed dry. It was feast day today for Mow and Sylph. The young ants left their nests today; they come out with wings. It's all over in a couple of days. There were thousands of them all over the field. I don't think Mow and Sylph stopped eating the entire...

Is that what they are.:D They're after something under the plot edge and under the plants from what I could see. No sign of them being interested in the plants. YMMV.:p Stuff they don't eat one months, they eat the next. In general these two and the rest when they were alive haven't shown much...

Three hours. Dry and warmish. The third chicken.:D Out and about. This is Sylph checking out Mow who had taken a rest. Sylph I think gets worried when she sees a chicken sitting down. Most of the others who sat down a lot ended up dead.

The cheeky bird has landed on my hat before. It's young and has been helping itself to the chickens food for a while now. The other jackdaws will come within a couple of metres but won't risk what this young bird will. It will be okay, I don't eat jackdaws.:p

I don't think it was because of a fox. I haven't seen the vixen for months and I haven't seen the dog foxes that come courting for a while either. Possibly a dog loose in the field. I have a feeling that the problem was human. I can't explain in any rational manner why I think this, it's just...

Two and a half hours today. 18C and mainly dry. Something was bothering these two this afternoon. While delighted to be let on to the field they stayed close to me, sometimes under my chair for at least an hour. I couldn't see anything but that doesn't say much.

Thistlewick Smallholding - Chickens & Sheep (for now)

We had donkeys. They can carry the firewood down the mountain the smallholding owner said. For the amount of money spent on a stable, the price of the donkeys, the feed, the vets bills they could have got a second hand Bobcat which wouldn't have tried to kick you and mostly, did as...
