Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

I have more abuse to report. A fire broke out not far from my house and the circling planes and helicopters caused panic in the flock, all of the geese were running around the yard terrified and panting, and Beavis and Butt-Head here “Truffle and Sunbeam” decided this was the perfect...

    Goose/duck feeders?

I use big feeder pans set inside a bus bin for the geese. The ducks have typical bowls set in a shorter bus bin.

    Where did my babies go!!!

They’re getting to my favorite age, the gawky goofy adolescent phase.

Bottom duck bill split (looks like it never fully grew together)

That is a vet situation. It’s either an old injury that didn’t heal correctly or some congenital issue. So what I think a vet could possibly do is create an incision along the edges, then stitch it together so that the gaping hole heals shut. It could even be a two part surgery if the skin...

    Possibly too young

She’s cute! You can also tell what class she falls into by weight. 10 or under to 11 pounds is small, 12 to 15 pounds is medium. 15 to 22 pounds is large. Regardless it may just be her genetics.

    Possibly too young

Those range from small, medium, to large depending on the type and lines. My guess is she leans towards her Chinese genes which do lay early.

    Possibly too young

What breed is she? I doubt the eggs are fertile of the gander is only two months old. Her behavior isn’t unusual if she’s a small breed, it’s surprising that she’s fertile at such a young age but not unheard of if she’s a small breed. Medium breeds only begin laying after a year. Large breeds...

Any advice for using Elector PSP on 10 wk 0ld geese

Can you post pictures of the spot in question? I don’t have any advice on that stuff but sometimes goslings chew on each other so that may be a possible source of missing feathers.

Young duckling, Bill injury bleeding from nostrils

She’s stopped bleeding which is great. She’ll probably be stuffy for a few days. Just make sure she has clean water to wash her nares and that she takes it easy.

    Gosling feather development

I don’t have sebbies so I can’t really say if that’s the cause of the wavy feathers. What I was referring to are these. Stress bars. Stress bars represent a brief halt in the feather shaft growth where there either wasn’t enough nutrients for proper feather development or there was some...

    Gosling feather development

Is the duck feed 20% protein? Also feed that’s over four months old starts to lose nutritional potency so if the feed’s old that may be an issue. There isn’t a clear way to tell what’s lacking until symptoms worsen, low protein while feathers are developing is a common cause but it can be from...

    Gosling feather development

What feed are they on? I can definitely see stress bars so a nutritional deficiency is highly likely. Gosling’s first feathers are usually funky though anyway because they have so much change going on in their little bodies but the stress bars are a common sign of a deficiency.

    Broody Drake?

So far he hasn’t been accepted by the older drakes or hens but his mother adores him so maybe he is picking up on her behavior. Her behavior is also unusual because in the past she didn’t like ducklings, she would brood but once the babies hatched she regarded them as some sort of monsters that...

    Broody Drake?

Bramble is an almost six week Welsh Harlequin cross with either a Buff or a Cayuga buff cross. I’m usually correct when vent sexing goslings but I have zero percent accuracy with vent sexing ducklings so I knew I probably was wrong with Bramble but Bramble appeared to be a female at first. After...

What did you do in the garden today?

I offered tribute to the garden deity, of which I would like to introduce to all of you. Almost daily I undergo a pilgrimage to its alter, to appease it with sacrificial offerings in the hope that in the future it will bestow blessings upon me. Bow your heads in reverence and join my cult...
