It made my heart jump to see you’ve got yourself a 3th bird with feathers. I hope he may shares some of the goodies and decides to stay for a bit. Can you see the gender? Did you give her/him a name?

How intense is your pecking order?

Very true. I had several issues for several years with juveniles who wanted to roost with the older hens. The older hens harassed the youngsters until they went to sleep elsewhere. They ended up in the tiny coop (too cramped) or the run (not safe a not nice in nasty weather). Eventually I...

A traumatised chicken never forgets ( my experience) . Chickens can coop with predators. If something has happened they go back to normal within a week or 2. Getting chased by adults as a chick, for many weeks, can traumatise a hen for life imo.

They hear you! That is why you need to make a sound with the treat-action.

I have two doors I open if they can free range. A small door at the front and a large door at the back where the rabbit fences are. If a few/most hens are back inside again , i close the small front door. So no chickens escape unseen. If I miss a few chickens I close both doors and make a tour...

I throw one hand with mixed grains/seeds in the run and start calling them. Start clapping if don’t see them. Soon a few come to take a look. A second handful and more chickens follow. (Repeat) Until they are all inside. Maybe you need better treats? What do you give them to lure them?

I give enough wet chick feed in the morning for a few hours. There isa container with pellets too. No treats. When I let them feee range there is no more /not much left of the chick feed. When I give treats in the afternoon/evening some time before roost time, the chickens gat a second small...

Tax 2 seconds too late to take a photo of 3 hens in a special pose. These 3 hens were in greeting, discussion, or gossip mode with their heads stuck together.

I don’t give any food if they free range except for the pellets. Try to find out what kind of treats they like most. Mine are very fond of rice, spaghetti, mealworms, cooked green beans, grapes, . Never give treats or favourite food if the free range. Always if you want them to return to the run.

Normally I keep them inside the large run until noon - 14.pm. The auto pop door to the run opens sometime after dusk, around sunrise. When I go to work or have an appointment they stay in inside until MDH or I come home. We dont free range if nobody is at home. When we are at home in the...

I give my chickens always chick feed too as a choice. It has more protein and less calcium. It’s perfect as a base feed when they moult. I have a moulting chicken without a tail. This funny looking situation lasted for a week or so. Her tail start to grow back visibly now. I never buy meat or...

Careful with dogs. They are predators and have to be trained or kept apart from the chickens. I never did. I have been reading it works to some extent with lonely chicks. BTW, You doing great and I suspect you learn fast to be a superior caretaker .

Mine do poop from the roost ( poop tray/roost area) but they don’t poop on the coop floor either. Yes but they can choose another spot after being disturbed. In search for a quieter spot to brood. If she needs to lay an egg she lays an egg on a spot she thinks is best at that moment. Some...

Im a bit behind (no alert), but like to respond bc separated sleeping arrangements are not discussed often. Mine are not really separated and share the run space /free range space but prefer to split up at night. I have 4 older hens who sleep in an extension of an old prefab. There is room...

Right 🤔 It might be possible the kind of treats and even the quality of the feed and treats are of influence. :gigMaybe the taste or sweetness is an underestimated indicator for quality. Seriously. I think a lot of discussions about feed are often not about what is best for your and my...
