    Lost 9 in 8 days (2 then 7)

Hawks are not likely the predators. Considering the amount of chickens missing, I suspect a pack of coyotes. That is one of the dangers of free-ranging. Also daytime predators,, do include coyotes, and fox. Some areas have feral dog packs as well. So sorry to hear your loss,, :hugs...

    Chick breed

Genetics can get quite tricky. When you combine mixed chickens with other mixed roosters,, you never know what you end up with. Not that there is anything wrong with doing such. I will follow this thread, and look forward to how your chicks develop, and look as adult chickens. And then...

Just my opinion. Use a heavy duty corded drill. Reason: That process does take a segment of time. A cordless, or even a lite duty electric ,,, the workload is too much for that small motor. You may be replacing your drill sooner than expected. Here is the idea. Imagine hooking this pony to...

Sprouted navy and great northern beans

First,,,,,,,,,,,Sorry to hear about Grandpa:hugs Soak, and cook. Beans are good protein. Serve in moderate amounts. Reason: overdoing on protein can lead to runnier stools from chickens, as well as somewhat smellier. Regardless source of protein. Just a heads up on Kidney beans. I know...

    Our Backyard Bee Journey!💗🐝

All this info is interesting. I sometimes get ideas that may, or not work. So here is this one. Would it make sense to try and vacuum out some of those MITES, to keep the numbers down?? My idea would be to have a small diameter hose at end to only suck up the tiny mites, and not large...

All My Chickens..... a coop opera!

That is a hard habit to break. :old One solution is a roll away egg nesting contraption. Also called rollaway nest boxes. You need to train your hens to use them. The eggs roll away after being layed into a compartment inaccessible to chicken pecking, and eating egg.

Question of the Day - Monday, July 7th, 2025

Just a little info here. I make cheese. (farmers cheese type) I use a yogurt culture, for one type. I use sour cream culture for second type. The raw milk bacteria is what is in sour cream. So these 2 cultures are 2 different bacteria's. and they develop at different temperatures. Raw...

another housing question- what about a metal shed instead of cages>

That size is fine. Mine was an 8 x 10. When I suggested the largest that would fit your needs,, I had in mind to get something bigger than a 4 x 6. That would get pretty tight/filled quickly. Since I'm here,, just a thought crossed my mind. Consider a plastic shed as a possibility. They...
