Well, I am here with some great news today. Mycoplasma tests (MG and MS) were both negative. I think I took my first deep breath in weeks after I read that news 😮💨
So, that's it I suppose. We will proceed with the planned change to the watering system anyway (just in case) and will continue...
Thank you for sharing this! My main priority with dissecting all of this is to see if any changes are necessary in my husbandry practices... The feedback from your friend confirms some of my suspicions and it's great to have that extra validation.
The air flow in the aviary is pretty good, I...
Thanks for your input 🙏 I have a vet friend looking at it too, so no worries at all. You're right that it's a lot to unpack, there's so much going on in this report 😓
After some more reading (perhaps too much) I'm thinking that, due to age/breed/bad luck/or another impossible-to-know reason...
So a "2nd preliminary" report came through this morning, and I'm not sure exactly what to make of it. Seems like something systemic and complicated... at least the edema/hemorrhages around the cerebellum explain her ataxia & paralysis (and possibly Pearl's symptoms were caused by something...
We culled poor Jenny on 6/30. She wasn’t improving, and I didn’t want to wait for her quality of life to get even worse. And I wanted to get some answers from the necropsy, in case there’s anything I can do to protect our remaining healthy animals.
I figured I’d post the preliminary necropsy...
I have no idea what caused/is causing it, that’s ideally what the necropsy will tell me :)
We use PVC gravity feeders, and I like them just fine, but they can be somewhat difficult to clean. We shortened the pipes to make it easier and fixed the mold issue. I’m not convinced the mold actually...
I haven’t actually sent out for the necropsy yet… she’s still alive and with us, and she’s actually been pretty stable for the time being 🤞🏻 As long as she has some quality of life we’ll let her stay… she’s still very wobbly and clearly having neuro issues, but I put some fluffy pine shavings...
Yeah, I’ve wondered if genetics might be part of the reason they haven’t aged well. Pearl was a jumbo pearl and Jenny (the one who’s declining) is a jumbo falb fee. I know genetics selected for certain colors aren’t always the most robust. My jumbo browns are going as strong as ever at the same...
Unfortunately, now one of my other birds has started developing similar symptoms as poor Pearl did… I changed the feeders, so I know it’s not their food. Still feeding 20% Flock Raiser, as I have been for years. I noticed her moving a bit more slowly than usual a few weeks ago, and now it’s...
I’ve got 4 EE pullets in the brooder now and I’m so excited to see what colors they will lay. Show off your EE eggs so I know what I have to look forward to! Green? Blue? Aqua? Peach? I’m so excited :)
Purchased both as sexed pullets from the feed store (along with a golden comet and a black sex link, but I’m not wondering about those gals for obvious reasons). I’ve been looking to adopt a rooster around the same age or a little older for them, but I want to make sure neither of these two are...
