If she's having trouble breathing, from a pathogen, VetRX drops in her throat twice a day may help. It's available OTC at tractor supply and most feed stores.
Since hay and wood chips are flammable, heating it with a propane or wood stove is not recommended. You could insulate it with 1" foam sheets then cover the foam with linoleum or any hard surface to prevent the chickens from pecking at the foam. Suspended infrared heat lamps are also safely used...
@Wyorp Rock @casportpony @Debbie292d @Eggcessive can you please bring this info to the forum's attention? I am seeing a ton of posts asking for help for swollen eyes and labored breathing. My flock just went through this and these are my learnings. I'd like to share this info with everyone else.
It could be avian metapneumovirus, although the swelling doesn't look as bad as some others. I've posted my treatment protocol here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/treatment-protocol-for-sudden-heavy-breathing-avian-metapneumovirus.1636233/
My friend had a necropsy done on one of her ducks at Ohio State University. We both bought meat birds from Hoover's Hatchery via Family Farm and Home and we also swapped poultry. You're describing the same symptoms.
Which hatchery did you get her from?
It's avian metapneumovirus. I posted a treatment protocol here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/treatment-protocol-for-sudden-heavy-breathing-avian-metapneumovirus.1636233/
Also, if this is the second attack in as many days, I think you will continue to lose livestock until you trap and/or kill the predator. Your state or county Dept of natural resources will have a list of certified trappers. I would keep all the ducks inside like in the garage 24/7 until the...
I've had several chickens with similar wounds (from an aggressive rooster). I sprayed them with BluCote and isolated them (in a cage In the coop). They eventually healed maybe 4-6 weeks later. They have bald spots on their scalp.
I'm seeing a lot of posts about fowl suddenly getting heavy labored breathing. I believe this is avian metapneumovirus. My flock (chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys) all had it last month. We are in Ohio. According to UPenn Extension, the virus is carried by wild birds and is spreading out from...
Hi, I've been posting about avian metapneumovirus. It started recently spreading from Pennsylvania to other states. It spreads via particles, not really airborne. It hit my flock last month and I lost several birds but I figured out how to treat it:
- Heavy breathing: VetRx drops in throat (just...
I had the same problem with my Anatolians, and eventually they stopped. Now they are fierce protectors of the poultry. I do believe they can be trained. I'd look for a registered breeder of your breed in your area and ask them for a recommendation for a trainer, the breeder might even be a...
Hi, how is your goose?
I had similar issues last month. My friend as well and her ducks tested for avian metapneumovirus. I found the following helped significantly:
Tylosin in water
VetRx in throat (a few drops greatly improved breathing)
Move fowl outdoors for fresh air
Tobramycin or...
...will i separate them from the turkeys? This hut is not big enough for 50 ducks and 30 turkeys to eat or sleep (I have plans to make a separate turkey roosting structure.) Another idea is to use the scrap material from this project and make a smaller 3*4' hut just for egg laying. Would that work?
