Update! So far 3 have hatched. The yellow (#1) were guessing Buff Orpington egg, The Greyish one (#2) EE egg and once the dark one (#3) dries cause it litterally hatched 5 minutes before the pic either Gold Lace Wyandotte or Black Australorp. There is a 4th egg pipped so we might get a 4th...
Okay thank you. Its the con to having 7 out of 8 brown laying hens lol not knowing which hen laid which. I still haven't figured it out after almost 3 years of having them. It just looks so much like a buff orpington chick.
I was told EE's are basically mutts of the chicken breeds so theres...
Decided to attempt a dry hatch for future goose incubation. I don't know anything about chicken genetics and how the mix of breeds goes. The first chick has hatched today on day 19 and its got me wondering what to expect from some of our girls.
I woke up this morning looked over at the...
First chick to hatch looks all yellow. So I'm assuming its out of a buff orpington egg. Our EE hen lays green/blue egg. Our roo is said to be an americana mix but I'm just calling him an EE as well..
Lockdown has started a tad early. Down to 8 eggs. I have to say I much prefer candling goose eggs lol. 4 out of 12 were green/blue eggs. I can't see very much in them. 3 out of 8 are those. Basically I looked for 3 things. Maintained heat, veins or movements. Those 3 I could barely see squat...
I have a question. I've heard stories about chicks hatching on day 18. But if lockdown is day 18 would it be bad to change lockdown to late day 17?
Also tomorrow is day 14 I'm gonna candle again to see if theres any quitters.
So in the end lots of flaws in our set up for chicks. Basically 6 is down to 1. 3 of which drowned in a water bucket I didn't think they could get into yet. So lots of things to fix before letting another broody have chicks. And that second broody who kicked out the 3 chicks before after I left...
Update! I am home and while letting mamas have babies have failed miserably (its fixable) anyways i couldnt resist candling the 12 eggs. WOW. Only tossed one. However I am having issues with candling 4 greenish eggs.. I mean it looked like they had veins? but not 100% sure. I'll probably still...
She didn't hatch the chicks she has but she was in the coop inside a storage bin made nesting box. Basically we cut a hole into a storage bin. Their eggs werent hatching after day 21 so I bought some chicks from a friend.
It's not going to well because of so many flaws in our set up. I'm...
Had an issue where 2 chicks drowned in the adults water dish. I have a old bucket with the water cups that I just need to replace the cups (Accidently drop) but was wondering what other people do for flocks where they let their girls raise chicks?
Also not a food or water question but we also...
I agree. 8 hens to a rooster is my ratio currently. We lost 3 hens in two years. I traded in our rooster after he attacked a broody hen that just came off of being broody badly. My friend had a much larger flock and more older roosters. Plus shes able to cull. She gave me a young rooster that we...
We buy bird seed without corn. Some buy oats or other seed bags. Whatever you want to grow. We all have different preferences. We do the bird seed cause its in the same store we get our birds feed from.
I go by 1/4 pound (4 ounces) of feed per chicken per day. I split it into two feedings. Morning and evening. Scraps are just extra.
Nothing wrong with not feeding free access. I personally can't afford the waste cost.
You can grow some fodder to give them since you can't free range them...
Yeah our incubators humidity read is higher than the little hygrometers I bought a few months ago. The meters are reading 27% and the incubator is 37%.
I would like to get the best hatch rate that I can if possible.
We haven't had the best and especially now that we have a second laying...
