I have 4 Dutch, 1 bantam mix, 1 bantam RIR, 2 bantam Amrock (the European barred rock). None of them with genes for show quality. Had a few others breeds like bantam Sulmtaler and Naine du Tournaisis.
They get and got along well except for the combination juveniles & roost time. An extra coop...
We had taco’s filled with courgette and other veggies for dinner.
For those who need inspiration for a new pantry (Centraal museum in Utrecht)
Tax. chicken sitting for a friend..
The mother is a bantam sussex. The chicks are from adopted eggs and something completely different.
There are so many different bantam breeds, and its unfair to accuse the whole lot.
My bantams get along fine. There is only one problem with a couple of hens who will not tolerate youngsters in THEIR bedroom.
We had one in the run once, early in the morning. He had bitten his way through a 8 mm thick nylon rope to get inside. Jumped in the run or was waiting in the run till the pop door opened.
We heard a lot of panicking noises coming from the hen house. Got up to see the damage. 1 hen down. For...
It made my heart jump to see you’ve got yourself a 3th bird with feathers. I hope he may shares some of the goodies and decides to stay for a bit.
Can you see the gender? Did you give her/him a name?
Very true.
I had several issues for several years with juveniles who wanted to roost with the older hens. The older hens harassed the youngsters until they went to sleep elsewhere. They ended up in the tiny coop (too cramped) or the run (not safe a not nice in nasty weather).
Eventually I...
A traumatised chicken never forgets ( my experience) .
Chickens can coop with predators. If something has happened they go back to normal within a week or 2.
Getting chased by adults as a chick, for many weeks, can traumatise a hen for life imo.
I have two doors I open if they can free range. A small door at the front and a large door at the back where the rabbit fences are.
If a few/most hens are back inside again , i close the small front door. So no chickens escape unseen.
If I miss a few chickens I close both doors and make a tour...
I throw one hand with mixed grains/seeds in the run and start calling them. Start clapping if don’t see them.
Soon a few come to take a look. A second handful and more chickens follow. (Repeat) Until they are all inside.
Maybe you need better treats? What do you give them to lure them?
I give enough wet chick feed in the morning for a few hours. There isa container with pellets too. No treats.
When I let them feee range there is no more /not much left of the chick feed.
When I give treats in the afternoon/evening some time before roost time, the chickens gat a second small...

2 seconds too late to take a photo of 3 hens in a special pose. These 3 hens were in greeting, discussion, or gossip mode with their heads stuck together.
