    Hens became roosters (?)

Hi. Are these the same "hens" you're talking about? https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/pullets-have-pale-ish-face.1669211/ I found your previous post and both of these birds have male-specific pointy hackle feathers. It was clear at this age that they were cockerels.

    Roosters or hens?

It's not a rule in all breeds but I believe these may be Barnyard Mixes and the mixed breeds often pop that rust color.

    Why did my rooster die?

Oh gotcha. I personally wouldn't add oyster shell to the food. Just provide it in a small dish aside from the food. I don't think that's what killed him, though. Calcium would take a lot longer to do harm to a rooster. More likely something else was going on. Chickens are really good at hiding...

    Wing It Ranch

Good news. I let both girls out of chicken jail on Friday night and they're back to their normal selves. Special is even back to laying eggs. The Ancona is not yet. I learned a lesson, though. I removed all the fake eggs from the nesting boxes in hopes that would help prevent broodiness...

    Why did my rooster die?

Poor little guy. Sorry you lost him. You mention adding calcium to their food. What do you mean by this? What exactly are you adding?

Five week old chick. Male or female?

It's still a little early but I'm leaning pullet. I don't see any glaring signs of it being a cockerel.

    Roosters or hens?

Good catch. I saw the red leakage on the white one which is what make me confident he's a cockerel but missed it on the black one. For the original thread poster.. rust colored leakage around the shoulders is male specific.

Need help, entire flock gone **warning- graphic photo**

It definitely looks more like dog than human in my opinion.

    Food for my flock

You can feel them All Flock their entire lives! That's why so many people here recommend it instead of Layer feed. The oyster shells will supplement their need for calcium but not force it on them when they don't need it. She looks like an active little one!

That's heartbreaking. You mentioned you have a few trail cams. Have you checked those if any signs? Oh I just you updated that Isla is there! Yay!! No injuries? I hope the others are hiding.

    Roosters or hens?

The white one is a cockerel. I think maybe the black one too if it's closer to 4 months in age.

    Do Hens “Crow”?

Agreed that hens will crow but it's pretty rare when they're that young. More likely that he's a cockerel working out the kinks as he tries to crow. Would love to see a pic of the bird in question.

Black sex link with pea comb?

She's so cute! I'm leaning pullet.

    Still unsure about these two

It's usually much easier to tell when they're older. I bet the reason people thought she was male was because she had larger comb. Some breeds have naturally large combs for both sexes (like legbars). The color of the comb is important, though. These two are still pale. If they were cockerels...

    Still unsure about these two

They're so cute! Agree they look like Crested Cream Legbar crosses. They are both female.
