Hi. Are these the same "hens" you're talking about?

I found your previous post and both of these birds have male-specific pointy hackle feathers. It was clear at this age that they were cockerels.
Oh gotcha. I personally wouldn't add oyster shell to the food. Just provide it in a small dish aside from the food.
I don't think that's what killed him, though. Calcium would take a lot longer to do harm to a rooster. More likely something else was going on. Chickens are really good at hiding...
Good news. I let both girls out of chicken jail on Friday night and they're back to their normal selves. Special is even back to laying eggs. The Ancona is not yet.
I learned a lesson, though. I removed all the fake eggs from the nesting boxes in hopes that would help prevent broodiness...
Good catch. I saw the red leakage on the white one which is what make me confident he's a cockerel but missed it on the black one.
For the original thread poster.. rust colored leakage around the shoulders is male specific.
You can feel them All Flock their entire lives! That's why so many people here recommend it instead of Layer feed. The oyster shells will supplement their need for calcium but not force it on them when they don't need it.
She looks like an active little one!
That's heartbreaking. You mentioned you have a few trail cams. Have you checked those if any signs?
Oh I just you updated that Isla is there! Yay!! No injuries? I hope the others are hiding.
Agreed that hens will crow but it's pretty rare when they're that young. More likely that he's a cockerel working out the kinks as he tries to crow. Would love to see a pic of the bird in question.
I'm so very sorry for your loss. Thankfully it sounds like you have a supportive husband to help you through.
It's going to be a full on chicken mansion!
It's usually much easier to tell when they're older. I bet the reason people thought she was male was because she had larger comb. Some breeds have naturally large combs for both sexes (like legbars). The color of the comb is important, though. These two are still pale. If they were cockerels...
