Will chickens tear up my yard???

We have 3 chickens and let mine free range 1-3 hours a day depending on how much damage they do. Our backyard is 50 x100 and it is grass with some gravel rock beds. They will tear it up but I've been reasonable with letting them forage, dust bathe and exercise. I herd them back in their coop...

    She's never gonna lay!

She will lay. I gave up on my 42 week old. I thought i just bought a defective chick but then she surprised me with her first egg today. I gave her a lot of discarded greens from the grocery store and some free range time. I'm sure it was just time that did it but she seems pretty happy...

    Finally.... An egg!!!

Two of my hens have been laying for several months now and was waiting for the last hen to lay. Tallulah-- our Salmon Favarolle finally gave us an egg after 42 long weeks. We threatened her with my recipe for chicken soup now and then but she just played aloof. The past few weeks I felt she...

How much do you pay for layer pellets and from what state.

Ok I think I'm getting ripped off. I just paid $17.50 for a 20lb bag in Seattle.(ouch) Organic, grown and bagged locally though. We get discarded greens from the grocery store and kitchen leftovers and it's been helping with the cost. I'm going to have to do my research though.

Tired of destroyed landscaping. You are BANNED from free ranging!!!

Yup, it's a pain. I've limited free ranging to 30 minutes while I clean out their coop. It's kinda sad but our backyard is fairly small and it can get messy especially in the winter with the dormant grass turning into mud. Not a fan of raking drainage rock or hosing off the patio. I think...

What to do when your child just won't eat?

Quote: Couldn't agree more. It's hard to watch our our kiddos not eat but I did had to do the above with my then 2 year old. Not easy to just shut up and release the power struggle but repeating the mantra "our job as parents is to provide healthy nourishing food and their job is to eat it"...

    Faverolles Thread

Are Salmon Favarolles really really slow to mature? I have a March hatched girl and have been getting eggs from the RIRs but not from the Salmon Favarolle. I have to say this is the only Favarolle I've known but so far she hasn't shown any redeeming qualities. Not to get too personal about...

    Coop Revisions

So basically I have still have a lot to do. The coop was finished in May and my pullets have so far been happy in them. Now they are just starting to lay and they are patiently waiting for my brother the contractor to make the proper revisions. I'm so thankful that he did the work but...

    Vinyl floor dilemma

Hi, I was able to find some scrap vinyl in our garage but there isn't enough to cover fully. Any recommendations on seam sealer. Was also thinking of just painting the floor and using the vinyl as removable placemats as added protection without the commitment. Thoughts?

Small Coop 75% done--need vent suggestions

uh sweet coop! That's committment. Love the window idea, I think if I showed this to my brother he would strangle me on the spot so I'll keep on the wish list of later projects. Thanks for sharing:)

Small Coop 75% done--need vent suggestions

It's amazing how much there is to think about when building a chicken coop. I'm really trying to keep in mind that it's"just a chicken coop" but this project has been all consuming. So I read vent information posted and I'm wondering about vent placement. There is one 16 x4 covered vent above...

3 week old favorelle chick with sudden(?) leg problems

Hi, I don't have any real advice but I bought a Salmon Favarolle at the feed store about 6 weeks ago. She too turned out to be a runt. The feed store told me the SF's were the oldest of the bunch ( bought a RIR, and Brit Red) but it was surprising to see how my little "Taluhlah" never grew...

    dirt floor or wood floor?

Nice pics! That's a good idea. My thoughts now are how to secure against predators. Did you use a concrete border foundation? If I do sand, should I skirt with hardware cloth or dig down? My other thought was using double hardware cloth instead of the weed block cloth to avoid another trip...

    dirt floor or wood floor?

Hi Everyone, I'm completely new! It's so nice to find a safe place to talk about chickens. "Chickens....really? Why chickens?" Well after a year of talking about getting chickens, I finally just did it. My Felix Unger-esque husband is still weary about the whole idea and thinks that I'm...
