    Nearing 100 degrees F

We're in Oregon as well. Our laying hens did pretty well with plenty of water and some icy treats (froze water with some scratch in it). The meat birds were suffering pretty bad. We have a big tarp draped over them. They didn't care much for the icy treats, but did enjoy the electrolyte water...

    Ventilation or Drafts?

@RobertaD1 We don't get snow very often in our part of the state. The top and back will also be covered with a heavy duty tarp, so hopefully that will help.

Western OR - Have too many chicks

It didn't start out that way. I regret it so much. My daughters found birds they really wanted at the feedstore a bit at a time as we waited for the ordered chicks. Couldn't cancel them because I also had meat chicks on order at the same time and it wasn't a large order, so...I don't know. Just...

Western OR - Have too many chicks

Hi... we seem to have accumulated way too many chicks for what we can adequately coop. Long story short...I ordered some and then found some at the local feedstore, then the others arrived in the mail. Anyway, I'm located in the mid-Willamette valley in western Oregon. What I have to offer are...

For the Run: Wood Chips or Sand, Back and Forth! Here's a photo - thoughts?

I've been following this thread with interest. If you don't have access to fall leaves, or prefer not to use them, comfrey also kick starts the composting process. It is super easy to grow but hard to get rid of, so a pot full may be enough for most people. I was looking up ramial wood...

    Ventilation or Drafts?

So we're using fence boards as an economical way to wall our coop. Being what they are, there are some small gaps here and there as we push them against each other. Do these gaps count as ventilation or drafts? We have two large areas in front covered by hardware cloth for air flow.

    Coop run in Oregon

I'm in Oregon too...just starting out. Not sure what part of the state you're in, but I second checking around for free wood chips. I know we can get our local utility to drop off a truckload in the driveway.

    Trying to identify breed

Got some more pics. Can't really see the feet here...legs are dark, feet are light. Hopefully they will help, @Pyxis . Feed store will have more goslings next week, so then this one will get a friend. :)

    Trying to identify breed

We picked up a lone gosling from the feed store today. Haven't had any luck looking at photos online to identify the breed. Currently have the gosling in with a couple ducklings around the same age. The sign at the store said 'assorted geese' so no luck there. The gosling is center in the photo...

Another question about my little one with the deformed beak

She just arrived today from Metzer Hatchery. My best guess is she hatched on Monday, so 4 days old.

Another question about my little one with the deformed beak

Thanks. I was worried about her little nose getting plugged...it doesn't seem to be as deep as the others. She's drinking okay. Ate some egg earlier, but haven't seen her eat any flock raiser yet. Made another egg just so it's available as an option.

Another question about my little one with the deformed beak

Hi... you were all so helpful this morning with our duckling arrival. I have a question about Ping, the one with the wonky beak. Take a look at her picture. Her nostrils don't seem to be as deep as her companions'...wondering if there is anything we need to watch for with her to help her succeed.

    Questions about new ducklings

It says this is injectable. Do they need injections?

    Questions about new ducklings

The rest seem nice and perky now and are eating the egg like crazy. Now that they seem stabilized, I'll run to the farm store and get the electrolytes, etc. Thank you all!

    Questions about new ducklings

We were following the instructions from Holderreads...but we can definitely go look for NutriDrench. Now, at 2 hours home, 3 are active and running around, and 2 are cuddling under the MHP (mama heating pad). This is the one with the off beak.
