The bird bath heater is trying to keep it in the 40s or higher but I don't know what the actual temperature is in the tank. The part that froze was everything outside of the tank. As soon as the water stopped flowing, the pump, pvc, vinyl and chicken nipples all froze.
This latest cold snap froze my chicken nipples. My water tank (which is insulated) was fine but the pipes to the nipples froze up so I created an insulated box to wrap around them (since the chickens would eat the insulation otherwise). I also greatly shortened the pipes going to-and-from the...

I made a change to the raised run area under the roost. I added a wall to one side so that it holds a deeper amount of leaves. This helps a lot with them kicking all the litter out.
For my next experiment, I added about 10" of litter to the bottom of the hen house (replacing the 2" layer...
I don't think I linked to the separate thread I made a while back on the watering system for the coop. Here it is https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1020604/my-heated-chicken-watering-system-winter-is-coming
Things that I would change.... I think like a lot of people have found, I would have made it a little bigger but the current size works fine for 9 chickens and probably would be good for up to about 12.
I have made another change to the coop last fall (that I hadn't documented here) when I...
From the chickens that I bought in the fall, I have one that I'm not sure of the sex. This one is 17 weeks and 2 days old and it a little bigger than the others but other than that, I'm not sure what to look for.
The watering system worked perfectly this year. No freezing up. I only had to fill the tank up maybe three times during the cold. They don't seem to drink nearly as much during the winter. The one thing I did have to do was make some changes to protect the insulation on the tank. They were...
It's now a year later and this nest has turned out to be their favorite nest now. 90% of the time, the eggs are in this one.
And the astro-turf liners for the nests have been great. I shake out the turf every month or two and have only had one broken egg which I think was because it got laid...
Yes, it's a regular 12V power supply that is plugged into a Farm Innovators Thermo Cube Thermostatically Controlled Outlet.

Here's the system I came up with last year to provide water for my chickens. I wanted something that would provide clean water to them for several weeks. The trickiest part is that I had to keep it from freezing solid during the winter. Here is a sketch of what I came up with...
I noticed the top right nesting box in my coop wasn't being used. I don't think think that any of the chickens have even gone in the box before. To test that out, I put a couple pieces of corn in it and after weeks, the corn is still there. It's the nest box that someone a while back commented...
I've had the nests blocked off until about a month and a half ago (with the turf in them) and my first layer only started two weeks ago. Only thing I've had to do to the nest pads is shake them out a little to get the chicken dust off of them.
Egg production has doubled today! My Barred Rock has been visiting the nest box about the same time every day for a few days and finally today she left something behind.
It was a very light brown (almost white) but I'm guessing they'll start to darken up as she starts laying more.
As a side...
Here's a time-lapse video I recorded of my chickens "sleeping" using the night vision webcam. They are wiggling around all night. I suspect it is because it is so cramped on the roost they've picked and no one wants to move to a different roost or maybe that is just how they normally sleep...
