...quail enclosure. I vacuum that filter out every week as well...and trust me IT NEEDS IT! lol.
We are going to try out some fermented feeds too, we already do sprouted foods, and the pellets. *Just make sure you don't have medicated feed... or their poop will STINK to high heaven!
Best of...
Thanks!! I will be sure to keep you posted. For now we are considering getting rid of the shavings all together. He is allergic to other woods do the pine may be attributing. Maybe.
I'll let you all know what we do!!! We are out of town currently so I can't make any changes until we get back...
They are in the only spot available to them, which is along our wall between our entry way and our kitchen. Kitchens off to the right, so technically no, but pretty dang close.
Thanks Sill, I'm thinking of doing away with the deep litter bedding too. Just convert the cages to wire bottom. I personally wanted to give them the bedding vs the wire for foot care. :( sigh... but I am thinking that may be a route I have to take.
Good idea on the two sets of greenery... I...
Sorry Yallapilko I missed over your message earlier I think my eyes just skipped right over it, apologies. They get plenty of air flow in it, their cages are designed so that they there is a 2.5" overhang on the back per cage. It's not an entirely enclosed box, just 2 walls and the doors. ;)...
They get dust baths weekly already, I can up that two more frequently, but ina deep litter system i read that it really isn't required. But hey I could always try it out.
Ok folks, we keep a quail 'tower' indoors and are using the deep litter method, which has been fine thus far. The stink isn't too bad but the dander these birds produce is nearly unbearable. My poor husband is suffering through with allergy meds but I'd like to know if there is any way to keep...
Ok it's about time I show you my indoor quail enclosure. :) This is deep litter bedding method with 3 quail per cage currently. Though butchering time will be coming up soon so most the males will be taken out. I'll keep 1 male for the system (maybe 2), but the rest will be laying females. This...
My newest additions! :)
Coturnix Quail. standards and Texas A&M's... these are the first 4, (may lose pip though) :( But they are the first 4 of 20, so 16 more in the coming weeks... waiting impatiently for them to hatch!
Ok I'll be sure to keep that in mind! Maybe after I'm done going through all my old aquarium sand I'll get that. I'll be sure to get the non dusty one! I've got about 75lbs of sand on hand though! Lol...I think that should last me a good while.
thanks dsbailey70 but I wouldn't even be able to use half of that! And with mine being indoors I'm going to steer away from really super dusty things if possible. (hence the sand choice to begin with, just don't need 50lbs!!) lol. I've got some pine shavings for bedding along with native...
Ah gotcha! Mine will be completely indoors, but I haven't decided If they will be in deep litter or wire yet.
What do for think of using sand from a fish tank. IVs got some sugar fine sand from one of my salt water fish tanks that I've long ago broken down. It's currently been dry now for 2...
Couldn't ya just pressure cook it though... I mean with added heat and pressure I'd imagine it's more than enough to kill off some pretty nasty things... It's pretty much a miniature autoclave. I'd trust it. Even parasites would get zapped with that. 10-15 psi for at least 20min sounds fine to me.
Yeah im thinking the BSF just aren't going to be economical for me to take on here. At least not for now... But maybe in the future. I can easily rear the MW indoors. And that's nearly a must for me. Along with a good high protein seed for my fodder I'm thinking ill be ok without the bsf. Maybe...
Sill, what is your non GMO feed that's there locally? Is it still a commercial grade feed? Do they happen to share their ingredient list? And whats the % protein of it? Are you able to keep BSF and meal worm production up high enough to keep at the correct ratio for them?
