A large plastic saucer (from a large planter) works great. The chickens love them as they a shallow. I put one out for each of my 5 chickens and they would all be in use on hot Texas days. No more panting or wings being held out. They are available from the garden stores like Lowes or Home Depot.

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

Our 5 year old Americana (the only hen to lay a blue egg) laid her first egg about 3 weeks ago. I got her as a 3 day old in 2012! Since then she has laid several more eggs. They are the largest eggs of the flock. We have 1silver laced Wyandotte, 1 Barred rock, 2 Welsummers, and a Rhode Island Red.

    Adult chickens with "pasty butt"??

Our 8 1/2 year old barred rock has a bad case of pasty butt. She had the same problem last summer and I bathed her gradually getting her clean. It is cold here now, but maybe 70 degrees tomorrow (very unusual). Even 70 seems cool to work on this old lady. I used to be able to pick her up, but...

Is the chick starter feed a problem for mature hens?

Our mature chickens are loving the chick starter and the increased protein has possible been the reason for the increase in eggs. Hopefully the chick starter will not be a problem for them. I have scattered the oyster shell calcium supplement in the coop to try to help compensate. The layer...

Comment by 'chickadee2' in article 'Safe Roomy Outdoor Run'

We have 6 chickens and about 450 square feet of inclosed (1/2" hardware cloth) run. This is in addition of their 'house'. Yet grass does not grow in their run. What size is necessary to maintain some grass?

how old before I move my chicks to there own coop

I have 3 chicks that are 3 weeks and 3 days old. They have feathers on about 3/4 of their body. It has been in the 70's and 80's here during the day, going down to the low 60' at night. I have them separated in half of the regular chicken coop, which is about 4'x10'. Everything I read is for a...

Girls started to sleep/pool in the nest boxes!

Since our chickens begin laying before I arrive for the daily cleaning service, this is a problem. We have been dealing with it in different ways. We put up a little door that keeps the nest box closed to the chickens. I close this right before the chickens go in the house for the night at sun...

Barren Americana - Legs close together

Our 8 month old Americana has yet to lay an egg. She is different from our 5 other hens. Her legs are closer together by approximately an inch. Anybody else have this happen?

    Indispensable Features?

The roof to our henhouse elevates on one side. It is hinged so I can allow the best ventilation possible.

A mysterious white egg! (We only have brown & blue egg layers)

My experience with Americanas is they always lay the blue/green eggs that gradually get very pale after a long stretch of laying. I have never seen anything but a white inner lining. No tan or bluish.

when will my chickens lay i got them in march

I clean the coop every day. That way it never gets to bad with 6 hens (4 hatched 2/28 and 2 hatched in 2008). Only one of the old ladies is still laying. By scooping out the poop daily it looks fresh and never gets overwhelming. Since I feed and change the water daily, it is easy to pick up...

when will my chickens lay i got them in march

We got 4 one day old chicks on Feb.22, and 2 have started laying. We have 3 tiny green/blue eggs from the Americana (Star) and today the first egg from one of the others. One Speckled Sussex, one Salmon Faverolle and one Silver laced Wynadotte. I will have to watch closely to try and figure out...

Is there such a thing as a grasshopper trap?

Grasshoppers are way too fast for my 75 years. We live on a wildlife habitat and there are too many predators to allow the 6 pullets to free range. They do have a large area (500 square feet) but NOTHING can compare to being able to free range and chase those grasshoppers. The chickens stand...

When can my RIR chicks go out?

I am trying to figure out how /when to put our 4 new pullets out too. They were 3 weeks old yesterday. I am thinking of putting them out in 2 more weeks with a divided coop from our 3 1/2 year old ladies. My busy husband is unhappy with the time and expense of adding some sort of an extra or...

Are these feathers normal? (lots of pics)

Someone told me that chickens can not digest milk products. I had been giving yogurt and occasional cottage cheese. I can not imagine that this is the problem, but if it is true, it would be good to know. Good Luck!
