I went out to our garden and found that one of our hens who is always escaping from our fenced chicken yard was in the garden caring for 9 new chicks. We want to let her raise them over there because we put them all in a little brooder tractor we have and she is so upset. If we let her raise...
Thanks. I’ll figure something out to isolate him. Maybe with his favorite girl? They are inseparable. We’ve got 3 ages and they stay in groups. This info. Is very helpful thanks. I want to be sure I get him set up where he can be cool. It has been miserable hot here.
Hello. Our rooster is limping on his right foot. It started about a week ago. My husband said he got out of the chicken yard one day and our chihuahua had him cornered. He may have gotten injured then. I’ve checked the bottom of his foot. No bumble foot. I’ve checked all of his toes and joints...
Thank you. Yes. 8x8 seems like a nightmare to clean. We found some great solid pallets locally for $3 each. We’ve started to build a second coop to put In the fenced chicken yard. I think that is our best bet and will give us some flexibility if we need to separate out some of the flock or the...
Ha! You have the start of one of those little chicken towns I have seen. I was seriously considering this. Today we sectioned off a portion of the fenced area for our little ones to have more space, but then we saw a hawk… so now I am looking at building a coop and a fully covered run. Most...
Great information. Thank you! I will look into an open air coop. I hadn’t heard of this before. I have been looking at hoop coops too. That would be a less expensive option maybe.
Yes. Thanks. Actually this is an older picture. I have since added more ventilation but didn’t take a new picture. I’ve got outdoor carpet burrows around the perimeter but could definitely need that up a bit.
Hey all. We have a 4x8 coop with run underneath currently housing 6 birds. 1 roo will go to a new home soon. We also have 7 littles in a grow out coop. I don’t think they can all comfortably sleep in the big coop. There is just one 8 foot roosting bar. Any suggestions on how to explains this...
I have a flock of mixed ages. We have 3 one year old hens. We have 3 15 week old Easter Eggers, two of which have turned out to be roos. The two roos have started mounting the only 15 week old female. It seems like they are young for this and she is smaller than them. They stay away from the...
I haven’t dewormed them. This is our first batch we have raised in South Carolina. When we raised a couple of flocks in Southern Arizona we never dewormed. I’ll go ahead and look into doing that. The fecal test isn’t a bad idea either. I need to do some research on the best dewormed to use since...
I found these worms when cleaning the coop. Not sure if they can from the chickens or if something laid eggs in the poop?? Any idea what kind? They are about the size of a long grain of rice and very wiggly. They inch around like an inch worm.
Thanks. I had it leaning like this in the indoor brooder and they were able to scoot as far back as they wanted to nestle in, but I can change it to the arch shape too.
Thank you. I will adjust the heating pad. I kept them inside last night. They are choosing to roost on the edge of the heating...
I’m looking for some confirmation that I am doing things correctly. I built an outdoor brooder for our 2 week old chicks. I have a mamma heating pad in there set up like a lean to, that they can go under to stay warm. I moved them out there today and would like them to stay out there...
Thank you! So for 4 chicks it can be a little less. I am thinking a solid back wall and then making the door screened facing the covered run. That way there will be less chances of rain blowing in too.
So I have enclosed the floor and two sides with plywood, and am trying to decide what to do for both ends. Solid doors with wire windows at the top? One solid door and a wire door going into the run part? I am not sure how much ventilation is needed.
