Its been a long night. :-) 15 eggs have hatched and were moved into another incubator to make room for new babies.
So far everything seems to be going good. I have one chick with splayed legs and another with curled toes. I'm on my way to tsc now for chick vitamins and vet wrap to fix some feet
My temps must have been a bit to high because my babies are hatching a day early!
I already have one out of the shell and 6 more that have pipped. I'm waiting patiently on the other 22.....
Its day 11 in my first incubator. I'm down to 30 eggs. everyone is growing fast. One baby was doing flips :-)
Its day 4 in my other incubator and my 10 sizzle eggs show lots of veining and one very active embryo. sadly, the 8 GLW eggs aren't showing any development. I cracked one and it wasnt...
I'm have 32 eggs in the incubator. I was candling them and dropped an egg on another one and cracked both :-(
I'm in the process of building a second incubator now. I just picked up 10 sizzles and 9 GLW eggs. They will be set tomorrow
i stand by everything i said. if they were my chicks i would kill them and start over. why risk spreading a highly contagious disease in your yard when you can prevent it? thats like having dogs and bring another dog with parvo home. Not all coccidia is species specific. i had a great website...
I built my own incubator. For a thermostat I used a switch out of a trashed electric heater. it has the wafer-thing in it. not sure what its called lol. I wired it into one of the wires going to the lightbulb and it works perfectly.
I live in a junkyard so I have stuff like that laying around...
I feel bad. Its so easy to get attached. Coccidia is a curse that keeps on giving. If you want to keep chickens or other animals in your yard than I would get rid of the chicks.
Do you know for sure that it is Coccidia? My chicks started out with bloody diarrhea. Then they got lethargic and weak...
Coccidia is a micro organism that lives in the intestines. if an infected animal is weak, sick, or stressed out the Coccidia can take over.
Giving the medicine will help the animals immune system fight off the Coccidia but it won't kill it.
your chicks will still be carriers of the disease and...
Have you thought about getting a couple different breeds to meet your needs?
I have Easter eggers and they are great. I average 5-7 eggs a week. I have had one go broody yet but mine aren't quite a year old. Their funky color patterns make great camouflage for free ranging.
If you plan on...
Yeah. My great deal cost me a small fortune.
Building your own brooder would probably be best. I would sterilize your friends brooder and let them know what happened when you give it back.
Check with your local tractor supply company or feed stores. Chick days has just started and they have all...
The chicks come separated from the hatchery and the boxes are marked. Whether they end up in the proper bin is another story. I have to agree with the other posters. most of the employees have no clue when it comes to chicks so you need to do your own research before buying.
I've had good luck...
Im partial to my white leghorns. I get an egg a day from each of mine. One of them has also been laying a double yolker at least once a week. Nothing seems to phase them. They have laid all winter and even through an ice storm lol
My Easter eggers do pretty good too. I get 5-7 eggs a week from...
if its coccidia I would burn all the materials that come out of your brooder including the dead chicks.
use a 50/50 bleach and water mix to clean whatever you don't burn.
coccidia is highly contagious and will spread to all your other chickens and can even spread to dogs.
If the chicks haven't...
It might just be the breed you bought. I got my white leghorns from tsc and they have always been skiddish. I handled them all the time when they were young and it didnt help. if I have to grab one of them now I have to wait till dark and sneak up behind em lol. My Easter eggers are a lot more...
i started out with 6 white leghorns from tsc. it was the biggest mistake i ever made lol. i am now up to 7 adults, 6 6 week old chicks i hatched and 34 eggs that i just set in the incubator. my 6 chicks...
In my last hatch I had a chick with the same problems. I cleaned the eye a few times a day thinking that it was getting stuck shut with crusties. 2 days after it ha
tched, it passed away.
From the time she hatched she didn't act right. she was never very active and wouldn't eat or drink unless...
I wanted to write this because all the info I read on incubating made me believe it was impossible. lol
My first mistake was I built an incubator instead of spending a ton of money on one.
My second mistake was I didn't buy a humidity checker. I just poured water into the bottom of the...
