Hi there,
I heard my username , and I came a-calling. I have also replied the your personal message chicks4erin.
Yes - I live in a snowy area and below are some pics, of last winter's storm. A tree fell on my eglu cube!. I managed to cut branches off the tree, so that there would be less...
Lazy J Farms Feed & Hay :
Quote:
There is no brand of feed, the feed is manufactured by the mill owned by this operation. I would venture that they produce between 5,000 and 12,000 TONS of feed per month for their own livestock.
Thanks!!
Does anyone know what brand feed these Iowa farms use to feed their chickens? If the feed is contaminated, I would be concerned if the brand feed is the same as the ones I give to my chickens. OR - perhaps these large egg farms make their own feed.
Anybody know?
FREE welsummer 2 to 3-week old cockerels. Pickup only. Incubated at home. Handled daily. They are hatched from mcspin's stock. See http://insideyolk.com/images/WelRoo.jpg on how they may/will look as adults. You may end up with show quality and show them at Topsfield Fair in the future (like...
Nice blog Kedreeva!
Here is a day 11 chick on an egg that I thought non-viable and cracked when I thought there was too big an air sac (half of egg). The chick was viable and I kicked myself.

I like the idea of orajel on the surface of the skin, prior to incision.
BTW - how did you "immobilize" the cockerel, especially the flapping wings? I can see the one can tie the legs together would help, but the wings are a different matter.
Good point about oral sedative meds...
Is there a powder or pill med to crush and feed to cockerel, to make them slightly sedated before surgery/caponizing?
I can think of gaseous anesthetic like ether and chloroform, soaking a cottonball and holding/leaving it near the cockerel's nostrils, but that VERY UNSAFE, and I don't want to...

yes - it's grogel. It comes in powder form, and add water to it. It expands like into a jelly-like substance many times its volume. Contains protein, water, minerals etcetc.
That amount of grogel mixture came from 1 teaspoon of grogel powder!

got your egg plans? Good luck...
To be on a brighter note. Thought I would share my "live" chicks pics.
The first lot of 5 that hatched:
The second lot of 3 that hatched on right (waiting to get dried off before merge):
The total final 9 chicks (after additional one more hatched)
A close-up of a few (see those fuzzy...
I would leave it alone. It should be fine. I use a Brinsea ECO, and prepared little paper cups to place to eggs for lockdown; but later decided not to. I would be concerned if the chick suffocated on the paper towl or paper cups. These new chicks ' necks are weak; and the risk for suffocation is...
Well - this evening will be day 25. I decided not to wait for eggs to hatch and did an egg-topsy. The last chick to hatch has been more than 24 hours. I had no desire for stink bomb to happen.
I have also read through many of forum questions on this issue, of "when to stop futile hatching" but...
By 6 pm today, will be start day 25.
Hmmm......
Thanks mrslb333. If 2 extra days in bator, does not result in bad egg explosion - I would be so cool with that.
Still pondering....
I had my first experience hatching eggs.
14 eggs set on 5/29/2010 at 6pm made it to day 21. On day 21, some eggs had pips.
5 hatched on day 22. 3 hatched on early day 23. 1 hatched late day 23.
So far - 9 hatched. 5 are leftover in the bator.
Temp and humidity have been stable. At lockdown...
Two pullets I think. Their Vs looked quite defined.
Why newtochooks, do you think the left one is a cockeral? The left's eye stripe looks quite good too.
Please UGAchick, update on your final verdict!
It took one day of calcium (oyster shells), for a fragile egg-layer I have to have better egg shell hardness.
There is grit with calcium added to it available. The chickens would take grit. But it is kinda expensive.
You may need to switch your layer pellet brand if the shells continue to be...

Thanks Katharinad.
I am concerned about this "egg explosion issue," and on day 11-12 (yesterday), found one egg that had an irregular air sac. The other eggs had nice air sac. One that didn't have any air sac got tossed, and it was infertile.
To be one the careful side, i removed the...
