I read that chickens wouldn't do this!

There are always exceptions. I had a hen take 6-8 week old chicks. I've actually never had a problem giving any age chicks to my hens. But those hens were silkies and cochins so the breed does help.

    Green Coop

How old are your orpingtons? They do get quite large when full grown. My uncle has that coop as a growout pen for his chicks (2-4 at a time). They get too cramped after a few months but then they go in the main coop. Personally I would only keep two full grown small bantams max in it with a lot...

Night layer hen laying from roost

A poop hammock works well to catch them. One of my hens started doing that last week and my feed bag hammock (8" below) catches the egg without breaking it. The egg does get dirty though.

Dog Run Coop - What Am I missing

Once the chickens destroy the grass (soon), the easiest way is to just rake the poop up as often as needed.

Crate to Coop Conversion -- Part 2

A lot of people gave you usable advice on how to make your coops better and marketable. I may have missed the post about trashing them but I did see the one about breaking them down to make a bigger coop (not the same thing). Also no one said 3-4sq ft per bird minimum was rubbish they said 17 in...

    Silkies are dumb as rocks

They'll figure it out sooner or later. I love my silkies but in my experience they are "special" chickens.

Crate to Coop Conversion -- Part 2

You are probably right about being on the wrong forum. Most people here want to feel their chickens are comfortable, even if it's just in our own heads, for our birds whether they are pets or dinner. If you read through the coop section you will see keeping chickens is not about money saved at...
