    Barn red hen house? Help!

No problem here. Often keep the big door open during summer days. They jump up and down all day long and hang out underneath for shade.

Chickens died from trying to keep them warm in coop!!

I prefer the "heritage" breads. Have 3 new Hampshire reds, black austrolorp, Columbian Wyandotte and a non heritage polish lace. She is the only one not laying in winter. Luckily there is a local heritage breader so it's neat to be able to go there and pick what u want. pics this morning...

Chickens died from trying to keep them warm in coop!!

i wouldn't disagree with you just basing on my own experience. Yes we do want and need to provide a "safe" environment as chicken owners..

Chickens died from trying to keep them warm in coop!!

unfortunately this is not the first post like this. Chickens, unlike dogs and cats, are not domesticated so mother nature gives them what they need to survive cold temps. We as owners give them shelter (coops) for shelter, they can do the rest. What about all the ducks and birds out there...

2x4 or 2x6 for roof of run?

I'm in nj too and would not use 2 x 4's unless it was a very steep pitch. 2 x 6's will carry much more load.

    Best base material for runs

I switched to sand this spring. I find I need to re level every once in a whi longer . They like dust bathing and leave divots throughout. Also the sand gets lower around their feeder. Probably from pecking at the fall out. So far was the best choice in my opinion. No smell. We've had hot...

    Got sand? You should!

The sand does make for a clean look. I like the fact that the sand keeps their feet clean, don't worry so much when the kids play with them. We ope the coop door during the day so they have free range as they want. I'm not getting the smell that I had the last time we had chickens with the...

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Google Cubic yard calculator. You can enter your dimensions and depth and get an instant answer. My run is 12' x 8' and I wanted 3-4" depth. I believe at 4" I came up with .45 cubic yard. It actually work out exactly right. I have a pick up and was able to pick it up myself. luckily I...

    Help! A stinky situation

This is my spring project, building a new run. Here's what my sand bed looks like. Quarry calls it "Concrete Sand". They also had stone dust but it's dusty. This stuff is fine crushed gravel / stone. They seem to like it so far. Gus

    Run Floor

My first time around I left the run "dirt". Problem is the poop and dirt will become mudd when it rains and then will start to smell. After a year off BYC's, I just built a new run (much bigger) and went the sand bed route, 3-4". So far seems great. The solid roof helps in the first place...
