    Big floppy comb

A few of us rescued some battery laying hens in a commercial hatchery. I now have a big problem. They have huge floppy combs. I notice when they drink, the comb flops down into the water. In the winter they will freeze. What can I do? I can't heat my barn.

I have a wooden floor in my little chicken barn. I use a whole bale of shavings and a whole bale of straw in the winter. In the summer, I just use shavings. I scrape everything out in the spring and fall. The only time I have a problem with odor is in the winter. I live in Mn so the girls are in...

Someone Tossed this in my Coop.

I sure hope no one does that to me. I live in town and we are allowed 10 hens, which I think is very generous. But Im at my limit. Lol. Good luck with your new hen.

How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

That's not bad at all. What kind of chickens do you have?

Our chickens won't leave the coop since it snowed

That makes a lot of sense. Do you get alot of snow where you live? That's a very long path to shovel every time it snows. I have to shovel a path too, but it's only about 25 feet from the house. The girls decided they like my sunroom in the summer. Silly birds.

How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

We went down to -24 below last week and the Silkies did just fine. No heat lamps or anything.Yes, I was worried. And I was ready to bring all 6 of them in the house if they were showing any signs of cold stress. But they did fine. If my Silkies can do it here in Mn. your chickens can do it too.

Our chickens won't leave the coop since it snowed

That coop sits up high. Is there a reason for that?

How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

I can't do the deep litter method in my barn, I have a wooden floor. I'm afraid the composting litter would also rot out the 2x4s that frames my barn. This barn was expensive to have built. So, I have to use shavings and straw.

How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

We are heading for some bad weather tomorrow into Saturday. 8-10 inches of snow, with temps down to -15 below. Windchill -35 below. We put extra bedding down for the flock. Everyone was wandering around inside the barn. The water bucket is heated. The Silkies all snuggle together in a corner at...

Our chickens won't leave the coop since it snowed

I have never seen chickens plow thru snow. I had a flock of free range chickens for the past 20 years and they never did that. I think that is amazing. Thankyou for sharing your pics!!

    Chickens first winter....

We got a big dumping of snow too. I live in Mn. 10 inches in 24 hours. My little flock of Silkies were just born this spring. They have no idea what is lurking outside the barn door. Lol. Poor little darlings. They are in for the winter. Unless I can get someone to shovel out a big area of my...

Our chickens won't leave the coop since it snowed

We just got 10 inches of snow this past weekend. 12/12/16. I won't let my chickens out. I can't get out to clear the snow for them. I had hip replacement about a month ago. My little Silkies are not made to walk thru snow that deep. But they have their whole little barn to wander around in...

How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

If 35 is too cold, then I am in big trouble. I live in Minnesota and tonight the temps will be down to below 0. They are in a small barn, with venting along the roof line. No drafts. But our temps get down to -20 below. My adult chickens don't get heat. The only problem I have ever had was the...

    sexing Silkies

As soon as I get the "kids", I'll put some pics on. It won't be until July 6th. The hatchery is having a hard time keeping up with the demand of these little cuties!

    sexing Silkies

I ordered 15 Silkie chicks and they will be here in July. They come as a straight run only. They can't sex them at the hatchery because they are too small. At what age can you sex a Silkie and how can you tell the difference between a hen and a rooster?
