Bird netting is not the same quality as any wire mesh, the net is much easier to break through for predators, and just not as safe overall for fears of getting stuck and other reasons. The ideal in my opinion is the 4 x 4 wire mesh in either a galvanized or stainless steel type of material...
Tell him to reinforce the chicken wire with some finer wire mesh to go along with it.
Together, they should be able to do the trick:

Look here, I am telling you, they will have the exact stuff that you are looking for to protect your loved ones (HAHA).
WIRE MESH!
You guys need to protect these eggs at all cost!
It is entirely possible that the squirrels are taking a good number of eggs from your coop and you are not even noticing them.
Get some wire cloth and keep these pests OUT!

One thing I would be very wary of with this coop would be a racoon or fox getting to it?
Is there anything looking to get at this coop in your area?
I may put some wire mesh around the outside, this way your wife will still like the looks of it and it will still be free of any predators...
There is no need to dig the wire into the ground. Just leave a little extra so that it can curl on the ground and secure with some heavy rocks and you should be all set. Racoons are very tricky and can definitely get through staple fasteners. I would use the most heavy duty stuff you can find...
