I have quail. This AM is the first time one "flew the coop" as I looked the tractor was covered in tiny ants. I moved it, sprayed it off, spread corn meal around it and sprayed the outside with lemon juice. We'll see.
I do 14 hours, its a small CFL 13w I think and it is off all night. I just use it to increase daylight for a few hours.
ETA: They have been laying for a few months.
Its a roo. I have 2 roo and 6 hens. It turns out I think I have too many roo. The question is really what one should go? But I guess I'll just keep the one that is getting along with the others. I haven't incubated eggs yet but wanted to keep the option open.
UPDATE:
Today I decided to put the recovered bird back in the coop and I removed the other male. After just a few hours he was beat up again (by the females).
I swapped them back. Should I just put the wounded guy on marinade and be done with it?
Thanks
UPDATE:
Its been a few days and his eyes are wide open and he has most of his feathers back, He still looks and acts a bit ratty. He can pick up dried meal worms off the ground so I assume he can see ok.
As far as the mean guy, I noticed that some of the ladies have a few missing feathers...
Thanks, Honestly when I saw him like that and so down in the dumps, it took everything I had to not pull the knife out of my pocket and cancel Christmas. I am glad I didn't. He has a ton of feathers back and only looks freaky because I smeared so much of the ointment on him. Hopefully tomorrow...
Thanks, eyes partially open (eye balls still there). Drinking water. Actually once he could see he realized that he could escape from the dog crate I had him in. So I had to reinforce it.
Update. He looks alot better today. Not sure if he is eating. I put all the favorite snacks in there. Also eyes still closed tight. I smeared some antibiotic cream on his eyes and wounds.
