where to get cornish x rocks chicks ??

http://www.schlechthatchery.com/index.htm This is who I used this year. Very nice people, very nice chicks. They are huge and at 3 weeks I haven't lost a single one. Also had the best prices I found. $65 for 50 chicks and that included shipping.

    Under the radar...

My turkeys are significantly louder than my ducks and I have Pekins. The toms gobble when you shut your door, when you open your door, when you cough, when you pick something up, when you say, "Stop gobbling turkeys". The ducks just have their committee meetings and it all seems to be very...

How do I keep from getting attached?

CX are ugly but they are very friendly. I thought they had great little personalities. I only had 6 because I took them from some lady that thought it was a good idea to get her grandkids chicks for Easter. Umm, yeah. Great idea. It was great for me I wasn't going to eat them because I...

Forgive me, BYCers, for I have sinned......

I'm not totally convinced that lockdown is really all that important. In our ignorance we did the following: We had 4 hens go broody at one time. In the past we have let a couple of hens hatch out their own chicks and it is so much easier than raising the orphan in a brooder. Mistake #1...

Is there a "smell" to home grown chicken meat ??

I would bet she was talking about the wet feather smell. There is a smell of blood (that coppery whang) during processing, but it is minimal. I liken the wet feather thing to wet dog....not something I want to snuggle up with, but its just a distinctive odor. "Bad" is all perception.

How do I keep from getting attached?

You just have to treat them like livestock. No names, no hand taming, no cuddling. I am kind to my chickens and they don't run screaming in fright when I come out, but I am just the food bringer. If there is a particular chicken I like they get a reprieve. Only one has ever been elevated to...

    Can EE's be all white?

I have 3 pure white EEs. They all have very green legs. No clue what color egg they lay but I assume they are green or blue since I get about 18 green and blue eggs each day

Waterer suggestions please, I hate my Little Giant waterer.

I haven't had any issues with mine once I figured out that the screw on lid has to be really really tight. I flooded the whole coop a couple of times before I figured it out. I blamed the ducks so it all worked out.

    SEPTEMBER EGG SWAP . . . . . . October Swap starting soon!!!!!

Hey all Obviously I'm new to posting and I just found the egg swap thread. It sounds fun, but I have some questions. I have several different breeds so all of my eggs would be mixed. We hatched out 35 babies in July and they are all pretty. Some look pure and some might even be pure, but...

    could my chickens drowned?

Absolutely they can drown. I use a 100 gallon stock tank as my filter. I was very careful to line the actual pond with rocks so in case a chicken fell in they could get out. It has been very successful...have had a few slips by chickens and a turkey but they were able to get out. I didn't...
