I just found my one year-old barnyard mix hen down with a twisted neck. She still has energy enough to flap and fight a whole lot when I picked her up but she looks pretty bad. She definitely can’t stand up or move. It looks like she’s had some loose stools May be a little yellowish white, no...
Update - she is back to her normal self, though as yet no egg. But also no funny poops or other discharge. I'm still going to give Ca+D3 for a few days, but it seems like she has recovered. Thanks all for the questions and recommendations.
Thanks for the further info / links. I'll keep watching for her eggs; I've been giving calcium for 3 days now. I have chicks with the flock, so not feeding layer at the moment - everyone is getting an 18% feed, no calcium added, but there is oyster shell available.
No other lash eggs, no bloating or respiratory issues. I'll see about pictures tomorrow. I turned her out this evening and her energy level seems normal again. I'll separate her again tomorrow and continue watching.
Thanks!
There is Safeguard Aquasol, which is made specifically for chickens and is added to the water for 5 days. You figure out the weight of all your chickens and then it tells you how much water they should be drinking, and you put out just that much water with the specified dose in it, a fresh...
I have a golden commet, probably 2yrs old, could be 3. She seemed a little lethargic the other night, and she had a bit of discharge - mostly clear but a little white. I did an empsom salt soak and not long after she passed a soft-shelled egg. Then I was feeding her some yogurt and she passed...
So here's the update, but I won't bury the lead - she didn't make it. She had not laid an egg in the time that I isolated her, but I also don't know how regularly she was laying - she was one of my older Golden Commets (I estimated 2-3, but she could have been 4), so I expect she had slowed...
Golden Commet, 2-3 yrs old
I noticed she was lethargic and had a droopy comb Sunday. Gave her an epsom salt soak, isolated her, provided water with electrolytes and oil of oregano. Reduced appetite - shows initial interest and will eat (scrambled egg, corn meal mush) but loses interest and has...
This chick got picked up when her legs were tangled in something, and the best I can say is that it must have pulled or torn something. Nothing broken that we could feel, but tender to touch at the top of the thigh. I isolated her and it seemed like she was getting better, but then off and on...
