    Losing Feathers

Thanks so much for all the tips! I literally didn't know any of those things. I added some sod and dust baths today. Going to make flock blocks tonight. Just left the door open today and let them have free roam all day. Do you literally let your chickens sleep outside too or they just get...

    Losing Feathers

Thank you! That is really helpful! We will utilize the measurements for sure. We will definitely do something tomorrow. I am struggling most with figuring out how to get them access to more space but still have it be secured at night? Is it possible to make something that just leads out to a...

    Losing Feathers

Thank you! I appreciate truthful. I don't need anything candy coated. So at this point you are saying you don't think the "run extension" you mentioned previously will be enough? Quote: I would need to do an entire redo to my coop? I just found her in the nesting box at 8:45pm here...

    Losing Feathers

I hate to keep posting in here... but I am totally at a loss. Here is what I have done: 1.) Increased feed to 20% protein crumbles 2.) Increased free ranging time to half the day I am not against increasing their run size, we are just trying to figure out how to do it on a tight budget so I...

    Losing Feathers

I was just feeding pellets before. We made our feeder based off a tutorial on here... where you drill holes in the bottom of a bucket and drill it to a planter base. Just seems like a lot is being wasted and I have neighbors terrified my chickens are going to bring rats in.

    Losing Feathers

Thanks. I will look into some suggested "extension" options. We live in a suburban neighborhood with neighbor cats roaming in our backyard all the time and owls/hawks constantly on the prowl. No more dangerous than anywhere else I am sure... I just don't know how to free range them for longer...

    Losing Feathers

Thank you for your help! So you are saying the cause is most likely that they don't have enough space in that size coop? Does free ranging more help solve that or is it more of a complete coop restructuring? Do you happen to have any suggestions for how to solve crowding without having to do...

    Losing Feathers

Hello again... I will admit that I still have not checked for lice... I haven't checked because it seemed weird that 3 out of the 5 continue to have feather loss but the other two remain looking normal... would lice only attack 3 out of the 5? They have had one cycle of protein increase, eating...

    Losing Feathers

They are eating Purina Layena Pellets. Label says crude protein is 16.00%. I don't know if that is good or bad. They also free range for about an hour each day in my back yard. We give them scraps but rarely anything with much protein. I will check for mites though I am not looking forward...

    Losing Feathers

not to my knowledge. We purchased 5 hens as chicks. I was told there was always a possibility of one being a rooster but that I would "know". How does one know such a thing? I mean we are only getting 4 eggs out of our 5 chickens and one of them does not have the feather wear the others do...

    Losing Feathers

I have started noticing a bunch of feather loss on all but one of my hens. We just recently started getting 4 eggs a day and we have 5 hens total. We also got a dog about a month ago (same-ish time the eggs started and the feather loss began). He is inside most of the time but when he is...

Thanks! I will measure today and adjust accordingly. Raised the water bucket last night so we will see if there is any improvement there. Appreciate it :)

    Help for the Backwards Chicken

Thanks for the responses! These ladies seem to be teaching me quite a bit more than I was ready for lol I appreciate all feedback as I am sure most of the issues stem from me. I am including some new pictures to help with the visual... though thinking the poop board problem is because it ends...

    Solar (water) heating in coop?

Is there a certain material that works best to insulate a coop? New here and ours is just a wooden coop with no insulation and a small door that is open 24hrs to the run. We are approaching our first CO winter with 5 hens and I am not sure how cold they will really be. I was going to look into...

    Help for the Backwards Chicken

Cheers! So I might seriously need someone to talk me off the ledge here and tell this newbie that chickens are in fact worth owning. I have 5 Wyandotts, almost 6 months, no eggs and a whole slew of non-functioning coop problems. One of my main ones right now is my chickens pooping on the...

    Nesting Box Makeover

Totally new chicken owner here so I have never seen the egg laying process. 3 golden and 2 silver Wyandottes. No eggs yet to my knowledge but they were born on 5/5/15 so thinking we should have some soon. Hubby revamped the nesting box today to keep shavings in and allow privacy... but I am...

    Do they need grit

Hi there.. this is not in reply to your question (sorry!) so much as an additional one? I have 3 week old chicks in brooder... keep reading things about grit. What is grit? Do they need it? When I purchased them the lady didn't say anything about grit... am i missing something? Thanks and...

    Stir Crazy in Brooder?

Azygous Thanks so much! I have been putting the chicks in my lap now when we have holding time. They don't seem to want to stay very long lol but it is fun! I haven't gotten any meal worms yet... mainly because I haven't a clue what they are or where to buy them haha. But I will try your tip...
