Hi all! Looking for some eye-candy for your chicken yard? I am in Northern Virginia (Fairfax County), and I have two Bielefelder roosters I need to re-home. I chose this breed because they are big, very friendly, and gentle, and my last big rooster was a fantastic protector of our flock...

I have had them before, and they do very well! My CCL’s were some of my best producers. The eggs are gorgeous. Sadly, my last two adult CCLs (along with some of my other favorites) were taken out by a coyote at the end of last summer . So I had to replenish. I have never had bielefelders before...

Hi all! It’s been a while since I’ve posted. I’ve recently added some crested cream legbars and bielefelders to my flock. Really enjoying the biele’s, they are super friendly (and not bad looking, either!) Does anyone have experiencing raising them in the summer in VA? I have heard they don’t do...

Help please! I tried to post this in the Diseases/emergency forum, but it did not post for some reason. So......Our three year old rooster kind of staggered out of the coop yesterday, holding his head side ways. By the afternoon, his head tilt was more pronounced, though he no longer staggered...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Thanks, Wildhens! I will definitely use your method the with our next batch of chicks! Now that this little group seems to be doing well, I think I will be a little more confident next time. I am so relieved that Cupcake seems to be a great mom so far. We still haven't fully decided what to do...

    Broody Hen Thread!

No, I didn't candle them. This is the first time we have had a hen go broody, so I have never candled before. I watched some YouTube videos about how to do it, but ultimately decided I didn't want to mess with the eggs too much (especially since I really don't know what I'm doing ). Instead, I...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Well, out of the six eggs under our broody, at least three hatched! I moved the mom and the babies to a new location in a portable coop. Two of the eggs did not hatch, I am guessing they were not fertile. Keeping my fingers crossed that the new chicks remain healthy! They are so cute!

    Broody Hen Thread!

We have some chicks! My hen was sitting on 6 eggs, and today is day 21. This afternoon, we saw two little chicks poke their heads out of her feathers! She is big and fluffy and completely fills the best box, so I have no idea how many have hatched in total yet. My question: she has been...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Hi! One of our chocolate orpingtons is sitting on 6 eggs--- they have 3 days to go before hatch. She is in the main coop, and we built a little wire enclosure around her so the other hens would stop laying in her best box . Two days ago, our second chocolate Orpington decided to go broody, and...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Hi all--- we recently had a pullet go broody in a nest box the coop. We're total newbies at this, so I let her stay where she was. When she left her nest to eat one day, I marked her eggs--- she had 9. Unfortunately, every day she manages to collect 2 or 3 more. Every night, I have been briefly...

    Northern Virginia

quote name="Davidconn8d" url="/t/759458/northern-virginia#post_16695471"] As for myself, I've been spending the past couple weeks trying to deal with predators.  I'm suspecting a fox :(  It got two of my brand new pullets, then my year-old Ameracauna (who I actually wouldn't miss that much since...

I am chiming in a bit late here, but I have had great experiences getting chicks from Ideal (TX, couple of years ago, in Oct.); Papa's poultry (CA, in May) and Valley Hatchery (Ohio, June). In all cases, I ordered small batches of various breeds (10 from ideal, 6 from Papa's, 2 from Valley...

Checking in to see how everyone is riding out the storm! I muscled my way down to the chicken coop several times today, and the chickens doing great. We got 4 eggs today--- so pleased that the girls are still cranking them. They are tough birds.

    Papa's Poultry Review

My chocolate orps are fluffy and beautiful, and are relatively calm. Oddly, however, they are the least personable; unlike the rhodebars and the cream legbars, they will not eat out of my hand.

    Papa's Poultry Review

They are all somewhat skittish, though the rhodebars and cream legbars will eat out of my hands. The chocolate orps are beautiful, but they are the most standoffish. Not sure why, we raised them from chicks and handled them quite a bit. I have buff orpingtons from another source (Valley...

    Papa's Poultry Review

My chickens are great! They are all beautiful, healthy birds. Five of them are now laying--- we are pretty excited, since it has been a while since we had fresh eggs. I was worried that we would have to wait until spring, when the days start to get longer!

Hi all! Well, I am happy to report that the chicks I got in late May and June are finally starting to pull their weight. My crested cream leg bar was the first to lay, in early November. She has been consistently laying about 6 eggs per week ever since. As of today, four others have joined her...

We finally got our first egg this week, from a crested cream leg at who hatched on May 15! She has given us an egg every day so far. Hopefully the other pullets will get the same idea. It is great to have fresh eggs again; we have been relying on commercial eggs since a fox took out the last of...
