Bunch of eggs, overwhelmed and no clue

They can go a few days with nothing because of the yolk they absorb right before hatching. Just keep it available and it will eat and drink soon enough. Once the new gosling hatches and fluffs up enough to go into the brooder, it will quiet down a lot. They really prefer not to be alone but it...

Just saw this post!! That's a great brooder. No need to worry about humidity now. That will work just fine!!

Bunch of eggs, overwhelmed and no clue

Yay!!! Congrats! The baby does not have to have company but may like a stuffed animal. You can take a plastic tote and put some wood chips in the bottom for now. You will need a heat lamp and a heat lamp bulb. I get 125 watt. Both lamp and both are fairly cheap. Should only be about $15 for both...

Bunch of eggs, overwhelmed and no clue

Yep! I would post it here for you but I'm not very adept at this site yet. I just type things in the search bar they have and it pops up. If you only want a baby or two, you could probably just trust the duck for now and have an incubator on standby in case she decides to leave them.

Oh no. That's heartbreaking. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I wonder what happened.

Lol I will try! I'm not quite sure on the homemade incubator. I've seen some pretty crazy homemade ones on here! I think there's actually a thread about it if you search it. I know you can use an old cooler or an old mini fridge. From what I have seen, I think the cooler one is fairly reliable...

    Late Feburary-Early March 2016 Hatch-A-Long!

Thank you! She is definitely doing much better. Finally getting back to her smiley self! I was sad to lose him but I tried not to get my hopes up too much because I knew it was a definite possibility. But yes, quite a learning experience! I can't wait for the next hatch! I want Cochins but I...

Bunch of eggs, overwhelmed and no clue

Maybe you could try to rig up an incubator just in case the duck does lose interest or you could take the eggs she can't cover. The duck will do a better job at hatching them than an incubator as long as she is committed to setting them.

    Late Feburary-Early March 2016 Hatch-A-Long!

That definitely appears to be what was wrong with it. I guess it makes me feel better that there really wasn't much I could do to help him anyways. Hopefully, that doesn't happen often.

    Late Feburary-Early March 2016 Hatch-A-Long!

thank you. I really appreciate all of the advice. I thought he was going to make it for a little while but then he just started getting weaker. I tried putting him in with the other babies but he just couldn't hang and kept getting mowed over so I stuck him back in the incubator and it just went...

    Late Feburary-Early March 2016 Hatch-A-Long!

Oh gosh, I couldn't keep my hands out of there. I honestly don't know a lot about this but I think you need to get in there and help them if you are okay with assisting. I don't think that's normal for them to be pipped that long and no more cheeping. Mine cheeped like crazy after pipping...

    Late Feburary-Early March 2016 Hatch-A-Long!

Thank you! How long has it been? Can you hear them cheeping or see the beaks moving?

    Late Feburary-Early March 2016 Hatch-A-Long!

Well, the hatch is over. Ended up with 25 out of the 29 that went into lockdown. I lost the little sickly guy. He just started going downhill and was gone within a couple hours. :( had to make a pip for the little tapping guy. Turns out his lower beak is bigger than his top and he couldn't break...

Thank you!! I feel pretty good about it. Sad for the three that died but I guess you can't win them all.

    Late Feburary-Early March 2016 Hatch-A-Long!

Update! Twenty three out. Three look dead. No movement at all. One is pipped and one is trying. I've heard him tapping since last night. May have to help him but I'm so scared to try. I assisted one wrong end pipper and he's almost out. Just trying to let all those little skinny veins finish...

    Late Feburary-Early March 2016 Hatch-A-Long!

Thank you! I know, it was really strange. Just yellow goo stuck all over. Really starting to perk up though so I'm starting to get pretty hopeful!
