    I have always had my chickens on pine shavings. And never had a problem with it. Starting at a few hours old in the brooder, then in the coop when they go outside. My understanding is that it is most common way to do it.

    Tomorrow they turn a week. After the first try my wife was upset with me wastin eggs. Then she went to check on them the night before the hatch. One started piping and the other two were rocking. Then she got all excited. Now she wants me to hatch a bunch for Easter.

    I would have to say that's not bad considering the condition of the eggs when you got them. My resultsfrom my second try 3 chicks. The 4th didn't look fertil, never got veins and chunked on day 4.

    Here is a picture of my Buff O roo, and 1 of my hens. The hens comb didn't get that big until she started laying. I'm not an expert, but my guess is they are both roo's
  11. The OutHouse look thing in the middle is my Water Box. I has a 5gal bucket with horizontal nipples under a heat lamp, arranged so it can be shared by all 3 coops while keeping them separate.

    Me too, I am trying to incubate for the 1st time, in a dyi incubator. My humidity was show low so I added some water. But I put the cups where they changed the air flow around the temp probe. And my second thermometer showed 106, 6 hours later. It was day 2. I'm crossing my fingers, and hoping...
