Vent Gleet, Parasites, or normal moulting??

Thanks for your comment! I haven’t ruled out mites. Not sure how to figure that out definitely. Suggestions warmly welcome! We adopted one extra bird than our coop math would allow, because she would have been abandoned. And now I wonder if it’s a tad cramped. They all love to roost together...

Vent Gleet, Parasites, or normal moulting??

Edit to say that the black chicken breed always seems to have the most irritated bottoms. One girl has a swollen vent, and everything looks rather puffy and enlarged. Not shiny, but always collecting poop and feathers, and nearly bald.

Vent Gleet, Parasites, or normal moulting??

...beautiful eggs every day. However, there was one single egg that we know was from the red sex links, that had some blood on it. They get along extremely well. Thanks all! * I tried taking better close-ups, but they are extremely speedy! Let me know if you need better photos and I’ll try...

Thank you so much. I just crushed up some calcium carbonate with vitamin D that I had and syringe fed her the mixture. I'll check for aqua mox as well!

    Egg Bound - Broken Egg!!

Hi all, We have a sweet hen in our coop who is egg-bound, and the egg has broken. I can see the tip of the thinned-shelled broken egg sticking out of her vent. Her comb is pale and looks frostbitten as well (unrelated or not?). She cannot stand, is incredibly weak, and looks at death's door...

One sick chicken in small, healthy flock??

Hello :) The other chickens had absolutely no symptoms before they died. We check them twice daily and treat them like family pets, so they get plenty of observational monitoring and attention. It was shocking and sad. They have been treated for mites, as well as coccidiosis. She seems to never...

One sick chicken in small, healthy flock??

Hi there! :) They have two water dispensers, one with a little drizzle of ACV, and the other fresh water replenished daily.

One sick chicken in small, healthy flock??

Thanks for your reply! :) She is large everywhere, both rump and belly. She does have a waddle, which we have always attributed to her weight. She just seems like an unusually hefty girl. The rest of our flock is considerably smaller, including her original flock sisters. She's always been...

One sick chicken in small, healthy flock??

Hi all! Over the years we have kept a small, tidy little coop of 6-10 hens. We currently have 6 hens, ranging from 2 to 3 years old. They have a warm and clean house, spacious run, and plenty of fresh herbs, veggies, grubs, layer food, calcium source, grit, and fresh ACV water every single...

ASAP! Best de-wormer brand in Canada?

Hi all! I need a de-wormer ASAP. Our flock definitely has parasites of some kind as two have died in the past week after making wheezing noises and shaking their heads and necks. Gapeworm?? Any Canadians here that can recommend a brand to try for treating our entire flock? We’re in Ontario...

Chicken is wheezing - and lost a hen last week

Interesting! I wouldn’t have made that connection. I just read that Gapeworm can cause that wheezing and neck stretching. Do you have any treatment tips? :)

Chicken is wheezing - and lost a hen last week

Hi everyone, One of my hens is suddenly wheezing. She makes an inhale wheeze and then shakes her head a bit. The head shaking doesn’t happen with every breath, but often enough that it is worrisome. Her sister died suddenly about 1.5 weeks ago. Just curled up in a corner to “rest” and was dead...

    Why did my chicken die??

That is an excellent idea. I didn’t think of that. Thank you so much!

How to treat entire flock for illness?

Hi everyone! I suspect parasites or worms in my small flock of 7 hens. We just unexpectedly lost one of our girls yesterday, and the others are beginning to have pale combs, and lustreless feathers. Does anyone have any suggestions for treating the entire flock as a preventative measure? I was...

    Why did my chicken die??

Thanks so much. That makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, we didn’t have that option as this was an unexpected emergency rescue / re-homing situation for the 4 new hens. My other 3 hens seem unaffected after the death of their sister, however, and the new birds are in wonderful shape, showing no...

    Why did my chicken die??

This is comforting! Thank you so much for your response. It really does feel like failure. We definitely do our very best to care for them, so it’s just so disappointing and sad when one drops dead for apparently no visible reason. She was a good girl :(

    Why did my chicken die??

We did a separate quarantine for nearly two weeks. They were able to see each other but not interact physically. The new girls seemed incredibly healthy after inspection, and still do! It’s so weird

    Why did my chicken die??

Hi all! I was so sad to discover one of my 2yr old Bielefelder hens dead in the coop this morning. Nestled into the corner at a funny angle. No signs of illness or injury previously. It looks like she fell off the roost (only 1.5 feet high) and got wedged between the feeder and the walls, OR she...

Is this a problem? Run size and too many chickens

Hi everyone! We adopted a few chickens last minute from someone who needed them gone immediately. We now have 8 chickens. We never intended to have more than 6 hens when we first built our enclosure, so I’m a bit worried about the size of our run. The coop is 5 x 8, but the run is only 8 x 8. We...

Feeding Essentials? What are must-haves for a healthy flock?

Hi all! We’re about 2 years into raising our flock. We have 8 hens (4 Bielefelders and 4 Red Sex Links). They are wonderful girls and we adore them! As they get older, we are committed to keeping them super healthy! I would love to know your favourite, must-have foods for their daily diet and...
