Growth on earlobe and elsewhere - help!

I have black australorps and dominiques. Everyone seems to get along pretty well with minimal squabbling. Funniest thing is that one of our other orpington's is top hen and we call her Boss Orpington so it's not a breed thing generally in our flock. That said, I'm not good at figuring out...

Growth on earlobe and elsewhere - help!

One of our 23wk old buff orpingtons has an odd growth on her left earlobe. It's grey with black flecks on it. There are also black flecks on her comb and wattle on the same side. Oddly, the right side seems normal. I've attached pictures below of both sides for comparison. Except for the...

    Help spot the Roo(s)?

Thanks everyone. I confess, I’m kind of sad and relieved at the same time. We were hoping for one roo, but were also a bit nervous about it since we have young kids who love being with the chickens and didn’t want them getting hurt. Maybe down the road when they are a little older... 😇

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Too bad the neighborhood is a chicken dumping ground. We’ll keep an eye out as well. We just moved into the area with our first flock. Nice to know there are others here in Concord though. Is there a local club or network?

    Help spot the Roo(s)?

Trying to figure out which of our 10 new chicks, if any, are roosters. They are ~19 weeks old and I know you're supposed to easily tell by now, but we're wondering/wanting to confirm about three of them shown below. Each has a slightly different story. Would appreciate any help you can offer...

    Nest Box Training Help Needed

Thanks for all of the helpful responses. I guess I need to just wait them out a bit and see how it goes. Here are a couple of photos of the nest box (interior and exterior) that people requested. Any other thoughts always welcomed! Thanks again.

    Nest Boxes in the Run???

Great - thanks! I'm struggling to get them to use the nest box in the coop already so I didn't want to confuse them or work against myself. Much appreciated. Now to get them to figure out where to lay in the coop... lol

    Nest Box Training Help Needed

Thanks! I have a couple of fake eggs in the nest box. It has a plastic astroturfy kind of grass inside (easy to clean), but I also put a bed of aspen shavings with nesting herbs in there thinking this might entice them to use the box. Trying to pull out all the stops. It's been less than a...

    Nest Boxes in the Run???

A few if my girls have just started laying and I'm also about to finish their outdoor run. I have a nest box in the coop already (at war with them now about using it, but that story is in another thread), however, I'm wondering what I should and should not add to the run once I let them out...

    Nest Box Training Help Needed

My girls are about 18 weeks old and some have just started laying. Preparing for this, I built a nest box cabinet off the back of the coop (get eggs from outside) and put a Best Nest Box in it. Of course, I'm finding eggs everywhere in the coop except for in the nest box. I tried the usual...

12 Week Black Australorp - Roo or Not?

Thanks for the feedback! I'm both concerned and also a little happy if that makes sense. Worried about the trouble a roo may cause, but I've also heard they add a ton to the flock so... Guess we'll see how he develops and if he is a nice guy maybe he can stay.

    Survey says... rooster?

Pullet! I just asked this question about my 12wk old Australorp. He looks totally different with a distinctly red comb and wattles. My girls look just like yours here with the smaller pale pink comb that still hasn't developed. I think you're safe. Here's a link to my post in case you find...

Woods coop - external nest boxes on the back wall desirable?

Thanks! Good point about wider boxes. Am considering a community box solution now actually. Much to learn, much to learn... :-)

Woods coop - external nest boxes on the back wall desirable?

Thanks - good point about the poop. Hadn't thought of that. One of the reasons I love BYC is all of the good advice here! Guess we will need to figure out a side wall instead or put poop boards under the roosts. We're trying to do dry/deep litter in the coop if possible so we were trying to...

12 Week Black Australorp - Roo or Not?

Thanks! So no hope then? Wondering how sure people are and how you tell this kind of thing for future reference.

Woods coop - external nest boxes on the back wall desirable?

I just built an 8x12 Woods coop. Many thanks to folks here for all the good advice and threads on their own experience. Pic below. Our first flock is only 12 weeks old, but I'm thinking now about building nesting boxes. I know people often situate them inside the coop across from the door...

12 Week Black Australorp - Roo or Not?

We ordered nine chicks from Cackle. 10 arrived in mid-April and they just celebrated their 12 week birthdays. Three Dominiques, three Buff Orpingtons, and four (Cackle added an extra...) Black Australorps. We think nine are pullets, but one Australorp is making us wonder. Personality wise...
