The barred rock will be one of the later hens to start laying. When they do start you will be pleased with the egg production. They are moderately broody and really great mothers at raising other hens eggs. They are easy to free range and keep close to cover and prefer to forage inside of...
I can't imagine anyone buying this chicken for a pet as it was bred to be an awesome brown egg producer and that is exactly what it is. Beautifully large to XXL eggs and double yokes are not uncommon every couple weeks. Ours like to cackle loudly when they get in the nest if anyone else is in...
We are completely sold on chicks from Murray-McMurray. Shipping to Alaska can be tricky at best but all of our chicks (18) arrived safe on an initial order. The next order was 25 Cornish X and all made it here alive as well and we didn't lose a chick. They may cost a little more but are worth...

We have to worry about predators from above as much as on the ground here in Alaska so MDH but me a predator proof coop.

We are firm believers in...
Mature quicker than most and lay nice large to extra large eggs on a regular basis. Hens make excellent mothers and great for sitting on a variety of eggs from other hens too. They are a chicken who earns their keep after they start laying. They can lay for up to 5 years.
