I know it's been a while, but I thought I would let you know the little chick is doing pretty well! I could not identify any of the chronic conditions in the chick from the info you folks shared with me. So I kept up with the Vitamin B, hobbling, and casting because it seemed like an incubator...
I found an adult formula B vitamin complex with no added minerals (iron or calcium), and I will start with 2 drops per day, going off of the dosage on the poultry podiatry website.
The leg just seems twisted at or below the hock. It's like the ankle itself is turned inward, and it won't...
It's hard for me to tell if anything is severely wrong with it's leg, it doesn't chirp any louder out of pain, as far as I can tell. Hard for me to notice anything popping tendon-wise, but I can't find too detailed of info on how to tell. It just won't rest on the foot, and it's about the same...
Hey folks,
One week ago I bought some 3 week old silkie/frizzle/sizzle chicks from a breeder. She threw one in for free that had curled toes from an issue with her incubator. Before she gave it to us, she duct-taped it's feet so they were flat, and told us to take them off in about a week. I...
Hey chicken-people,
I've just come home from a week and a half vacation, and I did notice one of my bantam hens had gone broody a week or two before the trip...and... I got home today and found two baby chicks under her! They are dry and fluffy, hard to say how long they've been out of their...

Her little body gave out sometime last night. Hard to say if we eased her passing or prolonged her suffering.
Thanks for your support. All I can do is learn from this and try to catch these things earlier.
This time around we just gave her warm water with a sprinkle of salt and a dab of honey. We also got the tube in somewhere between 4-6 inches.
Here's her picture from an hour ago after the tubing. The lighter is just for reference.
Is there anything else I should be looking for, or...
I'm new to lice and mite issues, in the 5 years I've worked around chickens we've never had an issue with them. I've owned a small flock for three years or so.
Yeah, I got 1 foot of the tubing (new, unused and clean) and it went in close to 3 inches.
I want to express how tiny she is- after researching chicken lice, I think she had them the whole time I've had her. She's always been smaller and a bit slower than the rest of the flock, and...
I hope that we did that right. Was fairly effortless, but the only syringes we have are 3ML maximum.
Her crop did not feel full, but I could feel it after we 'filled' it. I massaged it a little and will do another feeding in a few hours, if the crop feels more empty.
When we reached the end...
Somehow she's still alive, and in the same state as yesterday. I got an 1/8inch drip tube from my work, and am going to attempt to tube feed. We've mixed warm water, honey, yogurt, powdered layer feed, and some nutrient shake. Here goes...
I don't have the materials to tube feed. In the videos it also looks like a considerable amount of fuss and stress to tube feed. Why is this safer exactly? I am careful to avoid drowning her. I appreciate the advice and I am researching for future reference.
Should I fortify her fluids, when...
There's no vet's open past 5pm around here, neither are there any feed stores open past 5pm. It's 6pm now, so I have the materials I have.
She probably won't make it, I've lost hens in better condition than hers. Only once have I brought a bird back from this state, and that was with a...
Well she survived the day, but is even more critical now. Very labored breathing, laying down, eyes closed. Tucking her head mostly.
I started the flock on corid, and syringe-fed her 2ML of the treated water. Also 1ML of yogurt (I'm backing off on the vitamins/fortified shake, everything says...
Well, she survived the night. Still looking about the same. Going to feed her some more eggs with yogurt/nutrient shake before I head to work today. Hoping she makes it through until I get home.
Last night I powdered the flock under the wings and by the vent. Is there anything else I can do...
Thanks for your help and comforting words.
She's actually very young (8 months?) and does not have waddles yet- but I'd forgotten about that trick! Thanks again.
She hasn't moved much since I fed her some egg yolk/yogurt. My only hope here is that she's spending most of her time sitting...
So I half-fried an egg yolk, mixed it with mealworms and yogurt (organic nice brand, 6 billion cultures or something), and she wouldn't eat it. She did peck at it from my finger when I had it in front of her, but only one bite. After maybe 15 minutes of soft encouragement, sitting in my lap with...
