Broody Hen sitting on fertilized eggs

I'm thrilled to report my Broody Hen has completely accepted all five of "her" day-old chicks! She's a great Mom, and it's going to be wonderful watching them grow up with her! Thanks for the help!

Broody Hen sitting on fertilized eggs

Thanks so much for your help! I was able to find a local farmer who has plenty of fertilized eggs for me in the future, but also sold me five day-old chicks! We put them under her last night, and when I went out to peek an hour later, she already had them under her wings! So sweet! And...

Broody Hen sitting on fertilized eggs

Thanks for all this info. Sad to report, we candled the remaining two (of six) eggs, and they r clear. Nothing forming in there. She had kicked out the first four and she's still sitting on the last two tonight. I just want to understand what happened so I don't repeat this in the future...

Broody Hen sitting on fertilized eggs

Thanks for your quick reply. No, I didn't candle them, but I will now read how that is done! I've noticed that mentioned several times. What is the "magic day"? Is it Day 22? Do they all hatch within the same 24 hours--assuming they are going to hatch?

Broody Hen sitting on fertilized eggs

Could someone please tell me what's happening in my coop...I have a consistently broody hen (no roosters), so I bought her six fertilized eggs. I separated her, made her a safe, private nest box with plenty of room (an actual horse stall). She has been laying on them nonstop, Today is Day 22...

    Free Ranging with Predators! Help!!

Thanks for that reply. Are Owls like Hawks in that they will "move on" after a few days? We've lived here 14 years and I never saw one...until last week, and now I've seen him three times this week. I hope he/she will move on before I'm out of hens!

    Free Ranging with Predators! Help!!

Too funny on your SSS idea...believe me, it's what my husband has been telling me since we lost the first one. But I know this **** Owl is probably "protected", although I'm not going to care when I'm out of hens... But I am SO MAD AT MYSELF for not thinking of your other option. We JUST...

    I'm looking for Piglet Advice!

Thanks so much for the quick reply and advice. I wanted to ask about something you mention...I thought I'd like to be able to just let them graze in the pasture, but then how would I get them back in their pen?? Are they like my daughter's fat pony and so obsessed with feed that they would...

    I'm looking for Piglet Advice!

After convincing my husband that I haven't lost my mind, I would like to try raising two pigs for meat, in as humane and healthy way as possible. We live on ten acres, already have a barn, fenced pastures and paddocks, and have been enjoying our laying hens' eggs for a couple years now. I'm...

    Free Ranging with Predators! Help!!

I need advice! We are so frustrated, here in Central FL, with trying to keep our sweet hens safe while free ranging. We have a very safe and secure Hen House built out in one of our horse pastures, alongside their lean-to shelters. We have never lost a hen at night or inside. But we started...

Exotic Rooster with Crooked Tail and Balance Problems

Can anyone tell me what's going on with my Exotic Rooster...he's almost five months old, arrived with my batch of day old laying hens, and as he grew, I noticed the tail develop and realized he's a rooster. He's very handsome, with a bunch of floppy hair on his head, and a big beautiful tail...

    Question on Eating Fertilized Eggs

We are new to the site. We have 4 four-year old RI Reds laying hens. Four months ago, we got an assorted order of what was to be 8 more laying hens. It turns out, we were also given an Exotic Rooster in the batch. I am trying to decide whether to keep him or not, as we have never had a...
