It is a bad idea to have a chicken inside. They love being outdoors, pecking and scratching and looking for bugs. Having chickens inside is a noisy and smelly situation. Of course they are flock animals and need friends.
I used this dancing man all of last winter. We have hawks around from November to March. I used an extension cord from the patio so didn’t need a portable generator. My girls got used to it quite quickly. Best of all, it kept the hawks & birds of prey away.
I think that I may try this. Amazon has a 6ft inflatable man for $115 and the portable generator for about $100. A buyer on a review said they brought the inflatable man for the specific reason of keeping hawks away from the chicken yard. It had been successful so far.
My chickens cost a lot! I spent $4k on a fence because a coop can’t be seen by the neighbors(county rules). I spent about $1200 for a Omlet coop. I spent another 1k for runs. Then in November my flock was wiped out by a hawk. So in December I spent another $1800 for a secure walk in run. It is a...
This is my third flock since I started chicken keeping in 2021. Last summer’s flock liked almost everything. One of my girls especially liked grapes & used to carry her grape all over the chicken yard so the others wouldn’t get it. It was pretty funny.🤣 They loved the grubs but my present flock...
I try hard to lower my carbon footprint. I have solar panels on my roof. Usually my electricity bill is very low but it is inconsistent. They make us stay on the grid so no choice there. I always bring my own bags whenever I shop. I brought an ev last year. I use the regular 110v plug to charge...
Chickens love to free range more than anything. I live in the suburbs on a 1/2 acre lot. I have a fenced in area for my chickens. We have several predators including hawks. Last year I lost several chickens even within the fenced in area. My girl Esme started flying over the fence and free...
It has been very sad day for me. My favorite hen,Esme, was killed by a hawk. I thought she was large enough that she was safe. I hope she didn’t suffer.
My hen Ethel just started molting yesterday. She is 18 months old. She has been very lethargic all day. I brought her in my house because she...
I love it when they are young and do a little chirpy sound. But chickens grow up so fast! All of my girls are so loud now. Esme in particular screams as loud as she can, She picks at me when we are having a conversation. My flock live in a fenced in area in my yard but Esme likes to fly over the...
My flock is small, only three birds. Ethel has been broody for several weeks so she hasn’t been laying any eggs. Mostly I eat them & cook with them. Twice a week I make a nice dinner for my chickens which is usually rice, scrambled eggs, flax seed & fruit. They love it so much! There aren’t...
I have been a chicken owner for one year now. Building a chicken coop myself was not an option due to lack of ability and equipment. I don’t have a husband any more. Divorced not dead! So I brought an Eglu Cube which is supposed to house 6 chickens. My flock is only three presently. I really...
My post office never ever answers the phone. But you can request a text when they arrive online. I rushed over to post office when I got the text & had the chicks home within an hour.
My black copper maran started laying when she was 32 weeks old and usually lays an egg every other day. Her eggs are quite large. My super blue egger started laying eggs at 23 weeks old. She usually lays a beautiful smallish blue egg every day.
I have an Omlet too. You can pick her up and place her in the coop using the back door. I have had to do this several times because Esme ends up outside sometime.
As, that is so sweet. My two older girls follow me and peck my legs. I love having pets that pay attention to me. I think chickens peck when they want attention because after all they don’t have any other way to communicate.🐓🪶
