First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Ralph - That's so sweet of you to make sure she feels needed lol! The dinner sounds wonderful! My favorite chicken recipe, and my plan for these birds, is a sticky roast chicken. I use this seasoning blend http://m.allrecipes.com/recipe/45954/roast-sticky-chicken-rotisserie-style/ I mix a...

Betsy - They look great!! DoubleK - I am a horrible procrastinator, and first time chicken Mom, and I managed so I know you can do it! I just bagged, weighed and put mine in the freezer. Ralph - I'm going to need you to deliver to Colorado just before Christmas when the next group is...

First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Thanks for the encouragement! I gave them their last meal around 630 and said goodnight. I normally go back out once more, but tonight I won't be. So weird to think the next time I see them I'll be taking them to the cone . I'm excited to see how they finish. They've been on dry feed the...

Been a busy time for everyone! The 10 cx from the first batch will be 8 weeks tomorrow. We're set to butcher on Tuesday since it should be over 40 degrees. First time butchering anything so this should be interesting. My Husband will be helping, his first time too, but hopefully it won't...

-8° with windchill between -15° and -25° here. Our plan had been to butcher this weekend, but now I am just holding for any day next week over 40°. I ordered my spring chicks yesterday (15 cx, 4 polish, 3 silkies, and one bantam frizzle cochin), and think I'll stagger my second group of cx...

Swarming must be a cx trait lol. My layer chicks come up to me, but they will move out of the way. The cx just waddle/run over and jostle for position. I really think it takes me longer to get in the coop and to the feed containers than anything else. Quite a few have had fermented feed heads lol.

Cold weather came yesterday, and I do mean COLD! Dropped down to 5 degrees last night, and is in the teens today. I ended up putting two heat lamps in the garage with the two week old cx, and two in the coop with the seven week old mixed flock. So far so good with no losses. Posted a pic of...

Same challenge here. They will be 8 weeks on the 17th, but the weather doesn't seem to be in our favor. Thinking I will have everything ready to setup and pick the best day between the 15th and 24th.

    cornish x

Agreed. Most large hatcheries have them. Tricky part may be finding them this time of year. McMurray won't have any again until January. Worth looking around online. Good luck.

I'd wondered if the cornish roaster would be much slower since the website said they need another two weeks. I figured the extra feed for two weeks would negate the savings of the bbq or fryer specials they had so I went with cornish cross. I'm curious to see if your roasters pack on more weight...

My girls will be 6 weeks on Monday and so far so good. They are all roughly the same size. Not much variance in them. We're planning to butcher between 8-9 weeks. Not looking forward to the cold lol. Second batch should go Christmas week. I think I will do straight run in the spring just to see...

How's Everyone's week starting off? How are yours doing Catie79? I lost one cx overnight. Found her splayed out around 7 this morning. All were well when I went to bed around midnight, so I'm not sure what happened. I'll count it as my extra they sent. Going to move them all to the outside...

Been a big day for the girls. I added a few bricks and a branch for them to have a bit of variety and practice roosting on. Also switched over to all pine shavings and a food tray which has meant a lot more messy food. They all seem to be enjoying the shavings and additions :-)
