I have four sapphire gem chickens (a little over a year old) and we love in Philadelphia, PA. As I’m sure many other are, we are effected by the wild fire smoke blowing from Canada- in the last few days there have been air quality alerts and the air is kind of hazy and smells badly. I can’t...
Great Article! I love these ideas, and definitely want to try some out! Just by the way- chickens cannot have apple seeds, they are toxic for them! I would suggest cutting off pieces from around the core because it's still a wonderful treat for them :))
Good Evening Y'all!
I live in the PA suburbs outside Philly, and tonight the temp is going down to 20 degree's Ferenheit! The winter night will tend to be around this chilly but I need some advice on how to keep my 5 ladies (saphire gems and this is their first winter!) Warm, Comfy, and SAFE...
Oh my gosh that’s horrible! I am so sorry that happened :( I don’t have much advice on this subject but cleaning the area often should help deter infection and neosporin is often a good idea for dog bites (from what I’ve heard) Any change in poop is most likely effect of lack of eating but I...
Ugh I am so sorry that happened! I completely understand your guilt but everyone here has made mistakes and it’s a really sucky part of learning :/ I know our border collie got very focused on our chicks and acted strange but now they are grown he is used to them. I wish you the best with your...
Oh my goodness- I hope they’re not fertilized! That would be exciting but a little crazier then I’m ready for right now… We had 6 chicks we raised and one turned out to be a rooster- since we could keep him we had to give him to a farm a little bits away- he was nine weeks when we dropped him...
Hiya Everyone!
2 weeks ago one of my 5- Hens layed her first egg! And then, about an hour later, a second one! I was surpised because she was only 14 weeks old (early according to what I have read/been told! And I found a third today!
I have more info and pictures of the eggs and stuff on this...
And then this is what the whites and yokes looked like!! To my BIG surprise the second egg was A DOUBLE YOKER!! I don't even think its that uncommon but I was so excited :))
(some random questions- is it safe to eat the very fist eggs or are there any reasons why you should wait? Since I was...
Thanks for everyones support and info! So sorry for being MIA - its been quite a busy last few weeks and my Phone camera broke- but I now have pictures of the 2 eggs we got a couple weeks ago! I'll post them bellow! Our now 16 week old chickens have layed yet ANOTHER egg today also! I had been...
Hi all!
So as you can see from the title, one of my 5 saphire gem hens just layed her FIRST EGG! I can't believe it! I really thought it would be much later- like when they were 6 months old, however unless TSC was wrong we got out 1-2 day old chicks in the very beginning of march so they are...
I do think that makes sense. We have done a whole lot in efforts for our run and coop to be predator-proof, just considering the stories that we've heard like the ones you guys have from your experience! It does a lot of sense that you can never be sure- you could be very lucky, but never be...
That's really interesting! Our setup sounds similar to yours- and I have wondered if they will fly over the fence, but currently, they seem pretty interested on the grass and exploring inside. Do you live in a rural area or a more suburban one?
That makes a lot of sense- I will try getting a fake owl, maybe it will have some sort of effect! I think it makes sense to continue free-ranging when I am around and keep a close eye on them :) We also have lots of tree coverage so hopefully, that helps- Thanks!
AWWW, So adorable! Glad you were able to give them a cozy loving home and its so sweet they have other chickie friends to cuddle up with! My sapphire gem chicks had similar coloring when they were babies, but a little different :) Good luck! :love🥰🤩
