    Hi need an expert

Most of us like to use the look-don't-touch method. You can keep the chicks out with the pullets whenever you like, as long as the pullets can't reach the chicks. This way they get used to each other without all the drama. Is there a way for you to set up a pen inside the coop for the chicks?

cut on head of 9 week old pullet

Agreed. I use blukote same thing and I would dab it on with a cotton swab. She will heal remarkably well. I had a 9 week old pullet suffer a denuding wound tot he back of her neck when she escaped her grow out pen and got nailed by one of the older hens. She lost a strip of skin about an inch...

Advice please, having trouble integrating new pullets

I've read how to do it right, still not working. Here is the scenario, my 3 yr old Australorp (originally from a flock of two, one died) easily accepted 3 new pullets that were 4 months old (did the look, don't touch method, with them on the pen floor in a large dog cage) Those three are 9...

Thank you. Is there a breed that might be better to introduce?

    My dakota chick

Maybe you should try re-introducing her using the look-don't-touch method tomorrow. Or maybe she will be just fine in the morning, who knows? The nest box just sounds like a hidy-hole to me.

    Is my Chicken Depressed?

Hi there @Ellie's Herd And welcome to BYC. I'm sorry for the unfortunate circumstances that brought you here. Yes your chicken certainly sounds like she's exhibiting signs of loneliness. Chickens aren't meant to live a solitary life. @AlleysChicks and @MyISAbrownhens both offered constructive...

    "Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Introducing a single bird can be tricky in such a small flock. Introducing 3 should work better. It seems like most of the production breeds and hybrids are a little more violent, also. I do the "look, don't touch" method with new birds. I'll put a dog kennel in the run with the new bird and...

What goes good with Silkie Chickens?

We have a large flock(we will be overwintering about 70-80 birds) that includes EEs, Orpingtons-both English and American, silkies, Wyandottes oegbs, brahmas, cream legbars, buckeyes, mixes, a sebright, a Delaware, some Dominiques. We also have a variety of other breeds and mixes too. They all...

    Is my Chicken Depressed?

Okay, thank you! And no, it was not cannibalism. They just wanted her gone. They pecked her skull open and put a gash in her back, but that was mainly her brother

adding our 8 week old girls to the pen!

Hi and welcome to BYC. These links may help you out a little. Basically, I'd say that the "look, don't touch method" is probably the generally accepted approach. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1015820/reintegration-by-supervised-visits#post_15742910...

    New chickens want to roost?

Okay, I read through the article and what we're planning on doing is right in line with the look don't touch method. They're already outside of the main coop (I know, I'm a jerk and didn't quarantine the new from the old - is what it is at this point) in a pen where they can see each other and...

Topic of the Week - Roosters, Yes or No?

Oh yes. I have 4 roosters and I just love them. I have one new one about 4 weeks old with his sister hen. So far none of the other chickens or roosters bother them. Roosters watch out for the hens and will fight to the death if anything that is a threat to them. I let the hens and roosters do...

    Hello from Utah

so glad you have joined us. I so want to add to my own flock, but will hope for that next year. The Look - don't Touch Method is what most recommend. My only integration issue was a recovered hen back to her flock ( in my signature below) but you can search "adding to the flock" and...

    New to Back Yard Chickens

Hi Tina, welcome to BYC! I'm so sorry for your losses, your mother and your bird. Losing someone you love is so hard. When we introduced new girls to our existing birds, we used the "look/don't touch" method @Kelsie2290 describes above and it worked very well for us. There was still a...

    Hi there! Newbie from Florida.

Welcome to BYC! The easiest way to integrate is the "look/don't touch" method where the birds can see each other but no one gets close enough to cause injury. You don't say how old the 2 chickens are, but you may have to keep them separate several weeks until the little catches up some in size...

Comment by 'Sunsetlake' in article 'Introducing New Chickens: Using the “See but don’t touch” Method'

I raise my chicks in their brooder until they are 4 weeks old, then move them to a dog cage in the coop for two more weeks so the new ones and old ones get to know each other. I open the cage doors when they are 6 weeks old. I prop the doors open just wide enough that the new ones can get back...

Hello hello! Introducing myself to BYC whilst I am figuring out introducing my pullets to my chicke

Thanks for the welcome NickyKnack! Silkies are super funny from what I've experienced so far! Drumstick Diva: I'll have to get some new pics and post em' at the gender forum them. I'm hoping they are hens as well! Our town doesn't allow roosters. They grow so fast! It's crazy what a week...

    Greetings from Near Knoxville...

Glad you have joined us. IMO I would not mix the babies with 3 week olds. You can use the same brooder and separate them by age. Here's a link to an article on integrating new chickens to an established flock: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/adding-to-your-flock Most recommend the...

Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Nice little garden Telia, I hope it doesn't suffer from some overly enthusiastic gardeners of the chicken variety. I was wanting some advice if anyone has any ideas. I'm moving house in a week now, and currently not all of my girls get along, I'd like to improve and ease tensions between...
