    Never done before...

We have had chickens for 3 yrs now, new flock each year. Always had pullets, but this year we wound up with one rooster. My thinking is to separate him and one or two hens to raise our own chicks now, and save the rest for eggs. My questions are many, but first and foremost, would one hen be...

    Confused

Yesterday, we unexpectedly list one of our flock. She was found right inside the door to the coop, and she looked perfectly healthy. She had not been pecked, all her feathers we're still attached, she was just gone. Had anyone else had this happen? Any ideas as to what may have happened? Should...

    Production Blues and/or Rustic Ramblers

There was no dot on the head, just a Pinker comb, so maybe I'm still ok. Another, maybe off-topic question... If it should turn out to be male (and hopefully only one) will it fertilize the eggs from all my breeds, or just the blues? I told you I know next to nothing.

    Production Blues and/or Rustic Ramblers

They were purchased from TSC on March 24. They were all supposed to be pullets, but I've never had chickens before and don't know how to tell. I've just read here about how roostets have lots of red in Combs and wattles.

    Production Blues and/or Rustic Ramblers

Still looking for info on these two breeds. Especially the PB, as I am starting to suspect one of my "pullets" may have gender identification issues. LOTS of pink in the comb compared to the other two.

    Happy New home.

Just curious here, I bought what are supposedly pullets from TSC. I have pictures posted under "what breed or gender" but no helpful replies. Wanna take a stab at it? My thread title is "chiming in".

    Happy New home.

I guess the picture doesn't really do it justice, the top roost is about 8" from wall. Still too close? They're loving it right now, and wall is still poop free.

    Chiming in

Here are some pics of the birds in question. I did notice that of the blues, 2 have blackish grey Combs, the other is a bright pinkish color. That one also has pinkish coloring on toes.

So, I thought I'd wait until I got really good pictures and the Chuck's we're old enough to tell, but the more I read, the more confused I get. 3 to 4 weeks ago, I bought the following chicks from TSC: 3 Production Blues 3 Rustic Ramblers 6 Leghorns They are all supposed to be pullets. These are...

Also, just by the way, I do have larger feeder and water outside the crate, those inside ate just for nighttime snacking.

    Happy New home.

My flock in it's new home. A little concerned that they seem to still prefer their crate, but I am expecting they will adjust once they are done exploring. Side note, I opened the door to their run and they wanted nothing to do with the outside. I went so far as to pick one up and put it...

    A bit of "during"

Well, I'm not sure why a couple of these uploaded twice, but here you see the perch I added to the stall. I used corner bead and buried it around the base of all the walls. Today, I got the door built, across the stall from the perches. My new run is 80'xabout 35'. I did the math, and told my...

This was a great perspective. Thank you!

    Another question...(I did warn y'all)

See? That's why I ask all the questions. I was thinking one-sided. However, I live on 75 acres with hawks, eagles, caracaras (Mexican national bird) snakes, feral pigs, skunks, opossums, rats, and any other creature you can think of that would like a fresh chicken dinner. Aside from wrapping...

    Another question...(I did warn y'all)

Will my horse fencing be sufficient for run sides? Mesh is 2"x4", I know not to use it for chicks, but adult birds (or large chicks)? I'm looking at it, and I have a hard time picturing even my chicks now getting through it. Unimaginable how much money it would save me.

Here we go. I am new to chickens, got talked into a dozen pullets a few weeks ago, now they need a place to move into. I am looking to convert an unused horse stall into a coop, would like to semi-free range them, but I do have aerial predators, coyotes, opossums, Rats, etc. I am looking for...
