    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

(Sorry forgot to add I have also been putting Vaseline around the edges of the wound once a day for about a month). About a week ago we switched to just vetericyn and silver honey. When the wound was looking too wet we would just do it once a day, when it looked dry we did it twice a day.

    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

Hi all! Just wanted to update this in case someone else has a similar situation: it has been a month and she is healing really nicely. Attaching a photo. Still not fully closed up but no infection, new skin growing and the bone is no longer exposed. She even has new feathers coming in which...

    Lethargic hen, gurgling no appetite

Unfortunately we buried her before I saw this, but this is super helpful in case there is another unexplained death. Thank you!

    Lethargic hen, gurgling no appetite

Update: she died :( think it must have been a reproductive infection of some kind, or egg binding/perionitis. It’s bizarre because she was laying fine until she got sick, then within like 48 hours she was dead! Giving the rest of the girls extra calcium and worming them.

    Lethargic hen, gurgling no appetite

Update: she is still alive but remains lethargic and her tail is down. She ate a bit of yogurt and I’ve been giving her monistat. Got wormer so will deworm her asap. I noticed just now that she has a kind of funky smell (I think coming from the cloaca-butt-end? But hard to tell). Kind of...

    Lethargic hen, gurgling no appetite

Just remembered one detail, probably totally unrelated but just in case: the last time these symptoms occurred, she had laid a bright blue egg (usually she lays green only) right before she started getting lethargic. Not a lash egg, totally normal in every other way, but she has never laid a...

    Lethargic hen, gurgling no appetite

She has been laying fine up until today! I can tell because she’s the only one who lays green eggs. She hasn’t been wormed recently, I will go get wormer tomorrow and do that asap. Do you think it’s ok to worm her while she’s in such frail condition? Thank you for this advice! I will do that...

    Lethargic hen, gurgling no appetite

Hi all, One of my favorite girls is sick and I’m wondering what to do. She’s lethargic, hasn’t eaten all day as far as I can tell, doing that little penguin stance and falling asleep standing up. When I brought her inside she started making gurgling sounds and some fluid (I couldn’t tell but...

    Is this wound infected?

There is not a bad odor, took another picture last night, attaching here. How can I tell if there’s pus under there? I just can’t tell what’s going on under the skin.

    Is this wound infected?

Hi all, I posted a week ago about our Guinea hen that was attacked and has a large wound on her back. So sorry to post again! Just worrying about this one part of her wound. Ironically it’s the least deep part, it’s at the base of her tail and has looked fine until this morning. I’ve been...

    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

UPDATE! Ack..is this infected? So it’s been one week since the attack, for the most part her wound definitely seems better with no odor, pus or sign of infection. BUT I just noticed this morning that one of the more minor wounds at the base of her tail is turning green…it looks like there’s...

    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

I was putting vaseline on the bone and deeper parts, also washing twice a day with saline and now I’ve been putting silver honey on it. Does the silver honey do more or less the same job as Vaseline or should I keep going with the Vaseline too? Right now I’m cleaning the wound twice a day with...

    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

Update: she seems in decent spirits still: fighting me, drinking and eating, laying eggs, calling for her friends in her guinea voice. It takes me and my boyfriend both to hold her down with a towel to wash the wound. The wound doesn’t seem to be infected but a lot of fat and bone are still...

    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

She is definitely flapping around and fighting me when I wash the wound. I hate stressing her but glad to hear that it’s a good sign she’s got the strength. I read on other posts that Silver Sulfadiazine Cream is better to use than Neosporin—would you suggest that or Vaseline is still better...

    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

Just writing an update here: was able to wash out her wound as best as I could with saline and sprayed vetericyn on it. She’s still alert, eating and pooping. Even laid an egg today which blew my mind. I did notice that quite a bit of bone is exposed while I was washing the wound. Is there...

    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

Sorry one last question: should I be trying to track down an antibiotic tomorrow? I noticed that I may be able to get amoxicillin at my local pet store and wondering if it would be good to give her to ward off infection?

Thank you! She does seem alert so far. Hoping she makes it through.

    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

Thank you! Unfortunately it’s late enough here that I can’t get any saline wash, do you think it’s a bad idea to wait until morning to clean the wound? Also, I agree about the automatic door…have definitely learned from this.

    Help! Guinea hen seriously injured

Hi all! One of my guinea hens seems to have been attacked by something—we have an automatic door and she must have gotten stuck after it closed, I didn’t even realize until I came to check on them and found her like this. She has a huge wound on her back, it isn’t bleeding profusely but it...

    Frostbite on Guinea hen feet?

Hi all! I have been using backyard chickens for a while and never had to actually make a post but I have an emergency situation with my guineas. Two of them seem to have developed frostbite on their feet. I’m attaching a photo of the more severe case. I’ve never dealt with this, am I right in...
