I live in the suburbs so there aren't any real predators besides the occasional stray dog. The feral group got left behind by someone who moved. They live in a tree in my yard and roam about 4 neighboring yards. We all enjoy them so they have stayed. Every year a few disappear, usually when...

That's a possibility. There are 6-8 feral hens in the group and a couple have yellow legs. I captured and removed all the roosters but my own who has yellow legs. None of the chickens has any bit of white on them though. He's one odd duck. Except for counting them when they are in their...

So how does this happen? This guy is in a feral colony. I'm interested in how he might have gotten so white? Here is a picture of the mother, who is black. The father is my avatar photo. So any guesses as to what gives here?

tips for introducing your dog to chickens?

With my dog I didn't allow him to look directly at the chickens at first. I used "Leave it" and "Look at me" to do that, with food to make sure he would do it promptly since he will do anything for food. A leash is helpful to ensure the chickens are safe too. I would go about my work in the...

NEWBIE and Panicking!!! Here is the story.....

I would get some Seven dust and go to town on the coop and the chickens plus throw out and replace all the bedding and shavings. Somewhere in the Learning Center tab above you can read about mites and how to get rid of them.

do you have dogs? what to do with our dog that kills?

Can you fit a small dog pen or baby gate around the inside or outside of the door so that your parents can get in and out with injury to animal or person (they could fall trying to prevent the dog from getting out)? If the dog gets past the first barrier they can more easily put her back...

is there any such thing as organic cracked corn?

I saw a 5lb bag of organic cracked corn on Amazon for $8. I haven't tried it since I pretty much stick to organic layer pellets. If I don't have any leftovers they can eat I might give them yogurt or scramble an egg for them. I don't give them treats everyday, perhaps 3 to 4 times a week...

Thanks JShubin! It's confusing to the layperson. I can find lots of similar looking birds on google but it's hard to understand whether the labels refer to color, breed, lines ect.

    Flooring for My Run???

I would go with mulch. Built up to the middle or top of your bottom board in the run it should dry out rather quickly even though mulch holds water. It will eliminate the slickness problem.

Some of the ferals that live on my property: The two hens on the right are mine and I raised the rooster who went feral (traitor!) I don't know what the coloring of the far left hen is in the below photo (I call it partridge) but it's almost my favorite. And finally, a poor wet hen. I don't...
