Love this! Thank you for posting. I am in the mids of planning my chicken garden with seeds arriving just today! I am very happy that I have some of what you have mentioned. I will purchase the other plants you have suggested. Thank you again. Great article!
Looks like we are going to have a stormy weekend, so probably a good time to try lock them in. One of the younger ones put herself to bed in there last night though! I felt like I had won the Lottery
Looks like that’s what I will have to do.
I’m finding it interesting that the location of their old house seems to be what is drawing them back. I moved the tree branch to behind the foundations, now most of them are sleeping on the foundations, almost completely exposed. Makes me wonder if I...
Hmm 3 weeks is definitely doable.
Was your coop in the same Location as the last one? I’m wondering if that is part of why they keep going back the the foundations of the last one
Oh no, we will be full winter if it takes a few months. I may have to bite the bullet this weekend and lock them in.
Is there any other way to get them in without carrying them in or locking them? I had great success using a light to encourage a bunch of babies into the coop once, but they had...
It has good ventilation and they really wouldn’t overheat in there, they just looked so pathetic when I checked on them and I felt mean, so I let them out. I decided to wait for the weather to cool.
Will they eventually take to it if I keep putting them in there at night? I’ve only ever done...
Aww all my boys have done this. They find a nice nest spot, scratch around, flatten it down and make a bunch of noise. They also sing the “I’ve laid an egg” song. I also love watching roosters and how they behave. They are fascinating animals.
Hey everyone, a few weeks back we had an aggressive cyclone that caused severe flooding and damage to my run. Through some miracle, all but two of my chickens were saved, their two homes were completely destroyed.
I had a great set up with a “main house” which also had their food and nesting...
So she had been in isolation for a week and I was starting to believe it was malnutrition. She is the smallest and possibly wasting getting to the food. The wobbly head thing did go away. However, my young son was holding her while I cleaned her cage and accidentally put her down. She very...
Hey everyone, I have a 3.5 month old Silkie. Her growth has slowed right down and is now much smaller than her siblings. Most concerning though, is when she is sleeping she has a head wobble. Seems to be eating and drinking ok and mobility and movement when awake seems fine.
All others in the...
Yes, I have had two other babies from him and a Silkie. One is frizzle the other a stream lined Silkie. I was convinced they were both boys, always fighting each other, until they laid eggs. Also my rooster was so tolerant with them. He is very tolerant with this lot though and there are some...
Is it the red on the wings that make you say that? I suspect a cockerel with him because he doesn’t really have a tail whereas the white one has a very formed fluff tail
It is a strange mix, wasn’t intentional. My other frizzle rooster (dad to my araucana frizzle) passed away when my now Rooster was just a baby, so I had to keep this boy. It has made sexing them very challenging.
I still miss my old boy
So far all of her eggs have been fertilised. He has a little group that he takes for a walk every day, she is included in that group. He is her son though so I’m not sure if I can keep her babies anyway, because he will try mate those. Not sure if that should be allowed or not
That must be the problem then! Both nests were huge. If she goes broody again (and I find the eggs in time), I will remove half. I searched everywhere for this nest for weeks. When she went missing I thought something had taken her. A week later she popped up looking for food so I followed her...
